Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven.

Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works?

And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity. Matt. 7:21-23

It's obvious these "many" people believed in the Lord, it's also obvious they believed they were saved. So how is it the Lord said, "depart from me?" The Lord has condemned them to hell.

The Lord says "I never knew you." How is that possible?

This really is easy to understand. And elementary.

You have 2 people.

A. One is OBEYING the commandments of Jesus Christ.

B. One is DISOBEYING the commandments of Jesus Christ.

Which one is Jesus going to say depart from me,
ye that work iniquity?

I will give you 1 guess.

Your 2nd group of people, spoken of by the Lord, were not listed as disobeying anything. They are described as people doing good works, who are convinced that they are pleasing God.

For through the law I died to the law, so that I might live to God. I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me. I do not nullify the grace of God, for if righteousness were through the law, then Christ died for no purpose. - Galatians 2:19-21

They were not saved because they were not forgiven their sins. – they were under the law and thereby and only thereby guilty of inequity.

They came before Christ saying, Look, look at all the wonderful works WE have done.

The object of their faith was not in the hope of His loving and merciful grace. – it was not in His freely given grace but in hope of THEIR works were good enough which they claimed to do in His Name. They were false teachers.

If they had known Christ and His love, had a true interactive relationship with Him, they’d have been on their knees giving loving praise for His work and asking their Master for underserved forgiveness for their sins rather than saying, “Look at all WE have done.” They had just dug themselves a hole with that statement.

First you must answer my question:
Have you stopped beating your wife yet? I will give you one answer, Yes or no.

Nah, both your answers are based on presuming the quality of the works THEY do/did is what saves/saved them. It neglects that it only takes one sin to be guilty of all so ALL their works must have been through the vine (John 15:5) of being in Christ’ grace and that only comes in freely placing one’s hope and faith in that it is only He that has defeated death and a true servant would know that all the good works they did belong belonged to Him (Their Master) and been thanking Him for what He had done for them.

Rather than repeating myself, I was debating this last week against someone who was claiming a Christian never sins here.

Which began in a fellowship forum so was re-started here.

And has a sidebar thread on this very subject/passage (concerning judgment on works and false teachers/fruit inspectors) in the Baptist Only section http://www.baptistsymposium.com/for...ist-biblical-discussion/1512-fruit-inspectors.

If you believe as the person I have been debating I invite to take a look at what his beliefs are and decide if he is not espousing a works based theology that denies or as I have put it “abandons” the faith which saves, meaning that one is saved by grace alone through faith alone. Join in there too if you like. Seems to be a popular but good subject.

Would you believe this guy was accusing ME!! of being a Calvinist because I hold to that salvation is by only by grace through faith!!

I see something seriously wrong with the interpretation of Mat 7:21ff as one's works weren't good enough...

Yes, I see a misunderstanding of the need of ongoing grace everywhere, often expressed by the use of this passage.

I believe the context of 1Cor 2, which is often misapplied to proof-text depravity, is properly interpreted concerning this very point (understanding the progressive revelation of not being under the law and discernment of the spirit of a man who understands the faith by which one is saved must be based on His grace) and judging a man by his works by any other means by faith alone through grace alone.

In similar fashion, the misuse of Mat 7:1 goes along the same lines. If one is judging another by their works rather than their belief in Christ' loving grace then they are digging themselves a hole by demonstrating a belief in a works based salvation and by that they will be judged.

It is really very simple. Very elementary.

To reject Christ is to reject His commandments.

The commandments of Jesus Christ...The Word made flesh...the words of eternal life...is the only way to the Father.

To reject the commandments of Jesus Christ is to reject Christ the Son of the Living God.

John 6:28-29
Jesus answered, "The work of God is this: to believe in the one he has sent."

To believe Jesus(the one God sent) is to believe His commandments. If you do not believe Jesus(the one God sent)... you will disregard and not obey His commandments.

It is really very simple. Very elementary.

Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven.

Now the devil is going to tell you that....

(read all the excuses on this thread as to why they
do not or have to or need to obey the commandments of Jesus Christ
to be saved)

But the truth is....

the devil is going to tell you anything but the fact that you have to obey the commandments of Jesus Christ to be in Christ which is what you have to do to be right with God.

Simple as that.

very elementary.

I don't understand

Yes, elementary. The one who loves Jesus is the one who obeys, relies upon and follows Jesus.

In the passage you originally cited, the ones who Jesus does not know are the ones who demand a reward for the acts they have performed.

I don't understand the purpose in posting this. Do you think no one here has understood this prior to your arrival?

You haven't described Christianity however; you have described most of the other religions of the world--religions that try to gain entrance into heaven by their works, rather than by grace through faith.
Hinduism, Islam, Buddhism, etc. every religion of the world believes you gain eternal life through one's works--every last one but Christianity.
You have not described true Christianity. You have described some other religion.

You for one do not understand it. If you did you would not be saying this you have said to me.

Are you asking me to teach you or you just telling me that you do not believe what I have said is true and you want everyone to know it??

This you have said here does not even make sense. First off everyone is either doing good works or evil works. That is it. Nothing else.

There is good works and there is evil works.

Now let us take the stupid test.

Does God reward for good works?

A. Yes
B. No

What does God reward for good works?

A. Blessings
B. Curses

Does God reward for evil works?

A. Yes
B. No

What does God reward for evil works?

A. Blessings
B. Punishment(curses)

Does it please God for you to do good works?

A. Yes
B. No

What does God reward you with when you please Him?

A. Blessings
B. Curses

Does it please God for you to do evil works?

A. Yes
B. No

What does God reward you with when you displease Him?

A. Blessings
B. Punishment(curses)

Very simple and very elementary.

YOU CAN EVEN USE THIS STANDARD TO TEACH YOUR OWN CHILDREN.

Are you calling the poster that you are talking to stupid? You are calling someone stupid.

Is that a:
[a] good work
bad work

Will God:
[a] bless that
curse that

Pretty simple. Pretty elementary.
I am not going to interpret English for you. And if you have to have me explain to you what you can read then don't read my threads. I am not going to answer any stupid questions if I don't want too. Is that a sin? Yes or no? The only reason you read my threads anyway is to find anything you can accuse me of so to try to bring evil upon me on here. But rest assured...if I see this...so does God!
