Learning English

    Many immingramnts to the US - see no need to learn English - for whatever reason (actually excuse).

    Was reading about Werner Klemperer (best known as Col Kink on Hogans Heroes)

    Klemperer was born in Germany in 1920, however his Jewish family fled to the US in the 30's. According to the IMDb bio of Klemperer, he would "Immersed himself into teaching himself English so completely, that he found himself actuially thinking and dreaming in English."

    It can be done. and I believe it would be in the best interest of all immigrants to the US to learn English.

    One of my regrets is that while I was stationed in Germany (w/the US Army) I did not become fluent in German.

    I am sure there are those who do not bother but that would be a minority I think.

    I worked in a hospital in a suburb predominately Chinese....it was only the old folk who had trouble ....although most understood better than speaking it. The younger relatives had the opportunities to learn English and migrated to Australia, then brought the oldsters out. Their culture is very laudable in the care of the older folk by the younger folk and so that person was well served in interpreters etc.

    My Indian friends shame me in there multi lingual abilities, most have their birth language, quickly augmented by Hindi at school and English a little later.... I speak one language only.

    A cousin who is English lives and works in Asia, teaching English which he enjoys. There are no problems with behavioural difficulties....everyone there WANTS to learn. English language skills are seen as an escape from social circumstances through education and thus onto better jobs.

    The folks I have met who have migrated to a new homeland want to have better opportunities for their children, much like my forebears escaping grinding poverty from Europe and Scotland. They too had to cope with not fitting by the fact they spoke German at home, went to a different church etc. Not for themselves but their children and so on have benefited from such a huge undertaking as moving from all they know to a foreign land where the language was so different. I thank God they had the guts to do so!

    Think again. Because of all of the factory farms and chicken plants in our area, we have a terrible immigrant problem. None of them speak a lick of English.

    I refuse to hire them. The obvious fact that they're illegal aside, how can they work for us I they can't even speak the language?

    They don't come to be assimilated or to become Americans. They come to establish a Mexican outpost along the East Coast.

    Just keep in mind that very few (if any) Mexicans "cross the water" to get where Briony-Gloriana lives

    Unless they don't have a green card, isn't it illegal not to hire them because of their ethnicity?

    Although I'm quite certain that there are many people who live in this area of Middle Tennessee that are in, shall we say, "somewhat 'questionable' legal status," there are also many other people living here that have wound up residing in this part of "The Volunteer State" because they have fled their native homelands due to there being situations of severe religious and/or economic oppression in the nations they once (and, in many cases, still do) 'home."

    Some sources have reported that there are as many as 100 or more people (and/or language) groups that live in and around this area that's known to many Americans as "Music City, USA."

    As was mentioned in some posts in this thread, this not only creates problems for employers who have work rolls to fill, but also a plethora of other challenges for other people in other career areas.

    If, for example, you were a member of a school's faculty or staff, how would you like to teach a classroom of students whose "first (and, quite possibly, only) language (and/or alphabet)" is one with which you are totally unfamiliar?

    This is the case in several of this area's schools, and, given the fact of reduced spending levels as well as waning support by many of this area's taxpayers, a real resolution to this crisis does not appear to be readily at hand.

    Also (and probably more relevant to a lot of "BB Land" posters/readers), how are we as Christians able to reach such people as these--many of whom neither have any scriptures that they can understand nor (in many cases) have never even heard of Jesus in the way that God's Word presents Him?

    Although the church of which I am a member (Lighthouse Christian Fellowship -- www.lighthouseministries.org ) has been somewhat successful in reaching out to many of these "forgotten people," there still remains much to be done in this "ministry" that God, in His infinite wisdom, has given to us.

    We, as a local assembly of Bible believers, do covet your prayers that God will give us much wisdom and discernment in order for us to help extend "His 'Program'" and "His Kingdom" to these precious people for whom His Son shed His blood for their eternal salvation.

    Yes. That is illegal. It is not illegal, however, to refuse to hire someone who does not meet the qualifications for the job.

    Qualification #1: Speak English.

    True, NZ has very few illegals.....one it is far away, and two it is not seen to a get rich quick country.

    Australia however has a LOT of illegal immmigrants coming by leaky boats. I do NOT have much time for queue jumpers of any ilk. Terribly un-British to jump a queue....worthy of severe battery if not death (de tongue is inna cheek!). These people have taken time and money away from those who try to enter in the approved manner....surely the right way to go when wanting to start afresh. Sadly, as most refugees know.....when one is fleeing for your life, you grab the kids not your documentation, and so they wait it out in some squalid tent city for YEARS while identities are confirmed and paperwork moves at glacial speed.

    Who knows - someone may take you to court -

    The requires an employer to make "reasonable accomadations" and "reasonable" is up to the courts
