Let's check out the differences in definitions of everyday things/items by region or culture. I'll give a few examples and you provide your answers. If your location is not listed next to your screen name, please give it. Then if you can think of something to ask, go ahead and post it.

    1. What is the term for the sweet spread that you use to coat the outside surface of a cake?

    2. What is the distinction between dinner and supper? Is there a distinction?

    3. When you reduce the height of your yard are you mowing or cutting your lawn/grass?

    4. What do you call the end piece in a loaf of bread?

    5. What do you call the wall-mounted thing from which you might drink water in a school?

    6. What do you call the narrow road that runs parallel to a highway?

    7. What do you call the gooey or dry matter that collects in the corners of your eyes, especially while you are sleeping?

    8. What do you call a traffic situation in which several roads meet in a circle and you have to get off at a certain point?

    9. What do you call the miniature lobster that one finds in lakes and streams?

    10. What term do you use when you sell unwanted items (clothes, toys, books, household items) and people come to your house to buy them?

    1. Icing
    2. Supper is usually later than Dinner, though they can be interchangeable.
    3. Cutting grass
    4. “The end piece of the loaf” or just the “end pieces”
    5. Water fountain
    6. Access road
    7. No real name for this, but usually call it “sleep”, mainly because “eye boogers” is just weird to me (no offense ITL)
    8. Round-about
    9. Crawfish or crawdad
    10. Depending on the location, either a Yard Sale or Garage Sale, though Yard Sale is more prominent. If the whole house is open then you get into “Estate Sale” territory
