Are there any general rules for IFB Churches to receive members from Southern Baptist Churches? Are members received by profession of faith, by letter or other method?

There are no "rules". Each local church decides on its own. Some churches will not accept you if you were not baptized in a Baptist church.

Many IB churches would likely still accept someone's profession of faith even if made in another denomination's church, but they would not accept their baptism if it was by sprinkling or pouring or if it was infant baptism [and not believer's baptism by immersion after salvation]

Also, remember the Southern Baptist convention used to be different than it was now. I think it was 30 or 40s years back, when it united under a convention, before that it pretty much was an association of mostly IFB churches anyway.

A whole lot of IFB churches split from it, not wanting to take on the teaching of a universal body of Christ.

There are still churches in the SBC 'out in the boonies' that haven't been affected by the changes the convention has had.. and are straight out IFB churches.

Sorry if this offends anyone actually in the SBC.

Well, actually, the SBC was founded in May of 1845.

Most IFB churches in the south came out of the SBC in the 1940s and 1950s due to the Convention's drift into Modernism and Theological Liberalism. (The IFB churches in the north came out of the Northern Baptist Convention in the 1920s through the 1940s.)

The conservative resurgence in the SBC began in 1979 when conservatives took over national offices. The resurgence has been described as the Baptist Reformation. But the cost was quite high. Almost 2000 local churches left the Convention and formed the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship, a moderate to liberal denomination that absorbed those forced out of the SBC. :)

Now, many SBC churches, especially in Texas where I live, are now more conservative than the IFBs who left due to "liberalism." :D

Oh that's quite interesting! Didn't realise the SBC had been around for that long. But yes, this is what I was referring to by the drift into modernism and theological liberalism.. and the the split out of that. Just got my dates not quite right :)

And the Northern Baptists seperated from the Southern Baptists in the 1830s.

But the NBC was not founded until 1907. Until then it was all part of the loosely affiliated Baptist Union.

I know about the 1907 founding. That's why I just used the words Northern Baptists and didn't use Convention. Like minded Northern Baptists functionally organized themselves around specific ministries:
    • The Northern Baptist Home Missionary Society
    • The Northern Baptist Publication Society
    • The Northern Baptist Foreign Missionary Society
Like minded individuals organized themselves together. No churches were "represented".

This is why most churches have new member training. In these trainings, it will not only go over what you should know from the Bible as a new Christian, but also what is expected of you as a new member. Every church has their own views on the subject, and it is up to you to ask those important questions. Sometimes it is better to get these facts before joining and going through new members training.
