Note that the lines do not lead to the answers, but you must find the answers in the right column. I couldn't get the columns to stay separate with just spaces.

Well, I see one of them that does line up. I think I've only got five correct. Otherwise, I'm guessing. Nope, only four correct.

John Wycliffe was not the first. The first known translation of the bible in English was the Lindisfarne Gospels dating to about 700 A.D. These were in Latin with an Anglo-Saxon interlinear translation added about 950 A.D.

In about 1000 A.D., Aelfric translated a condensed version of the first seven books of the Old Testament.

In about 1300 the Ormulum appeared, translated by Orm, an Augustinian monk. This work was originally the Gospels, but later Genesis and Exodus were translated into English.

About the same time, Richard Rolle translated the Psalms into Early Middle English, of which 170 manuscripts still survive.

Granted they are not the complete bible but neither was Wycliffe's. :)

I should have said (hint) that only two line up. But tomorrow, perhaps, I'll give the answers. Maybe you did better than you thought.

Yes. And I can't seem to shut it off. Which can make for some very awkward social occasions! :D :D

On a side note: TC, are you as shocked as Agedman professed to be when he realized that most Christians (at least on the BB) haven't read The Epistle of Polycarp to the Philippians? ;-)

That was one of the strangest comments (and I have heard plenty) ever made on the BB.

By the way, I have that letter and more more ancient documents (translated into English of course) in a very old book that my mom had.

I'm grading it right now. Some of my students struggled with this first part--not sure why.

I realize that #20 is a repeat question and therefore a gimme. So I need to revise this before next year. :)
