Why is the person who leads the music called the "worship leader"

I do not like that term because it appeares to limit worship to ONLY the music. Worship, in addition to the message includes offering, missions, ect; and not JUST the music.

I agree with you. That kind of designation muddles things up.
As important as prayer and praise are --the core of worship in the assembly is the preaching of God's Word.

I agree. The whole service is worship - hence the name, worship service. As a result, we don't have anyone with that title.

I will have to pay better attention but, I think in the Churches I have gone to the person was called the Song Leader, or Music Director.

The title Worship Leader doesn't sound correct to me. It sounds more like a person who schedules the whole service, and if anyone was to have the title, I would think it would be the Pastor.

Just thinking about this, a "song leader" sounds like someone around the camp fire who starts singing songs so everyone can join along. A music director sounds like someone with loads of music scores around him and making sure everyone around him has a bunch of music scores as well - kind of like an orchestra leader. We had a worship leader because ... well, they weren't a pastor and they were in charge of the music/worship elements in the church. They did organize the musicians and singers, met with the pastor to find out what the sermon is about so he could find songs that would go with the message, would work with the "non Sunday morning service" music teams to help them with their work (thinking the youth music teams). Now that position is a pastor position in our church and this guy is also in charge of all of the artistic aspects of things. Tonight he was working on the lights in the sanctuary and training someone on the light board and earlier today we were going over the graphics ideas that we both had for the Christmas season. It's a big job! :)

It's actually nice - and cheaper than remodeling our sanctuary!! We have VERY 80s curtains on what is basically a stage kind of a set-up. So think of a theater with a wooden stage and heavy curtains. The curtains are pink in the front and grey in the back (burgundy/pink/grey is the color scheme). Now with some lights, we can change the look of the grey curtain that covers the back of the stage to bring it a bit more modern. Last night we found a really nice fall color that will look nice and then when we do our Advent dramas, we can now darken most of the curtains but spotlight one area to add to the feel of what we're doing. It really looks great and it was extremely cost effective.

Personally, I don't think the title of the person leading the singing makes a hill of beans of a difference - worship leader, song director ....

We call ours the minister of music.

I've been called everything short of worship leader. Maybe if I were to wear skinny jeans and drink coffee while I lead....

I agree. It is one of those little irritants that I won't fight over, but still bothers me.

Leaders are people at the front of the line, people who start something, they are the ones who begin something in a group.

The title is "Worship Leader" is because they generally start the service and they are the one who 'leads the way' into the service of worshiping our Lord.

Sounds like they are reaching for use of that title.

Actually isnt it the piano player or organist which starts first - so she should be the worship leader.
