I just read this article this morning that is an interview with Keith Getty on his writing of the song In Christ Alone and the issue with some of the words that hymnal publishers wanted to change. I know there are some who say that modern Christian music is shallow and doesn't have the depth of theology that old hymns do but I don't think In Christ Alone could be included in that category. I appreciate the firmness of conviction of beliefs that Keith expresses here. :)

I love that song! Those who want to change that phrase don't understand why Jesus had to die. Mad

I just skimmed the article, but IMHO, the change requested, while true, is missing the entire point of the crucification. IOW, it's catering to the moderm concept of God as LOVING, but ignoring that He is also a God of justice, that must be satisfied.
That satisfaction can come either through the death of Christ for us, OR paid by the individual that refuses to accept the sacrifice of Christ as payment for the individual's sins.
Will go back and rad more thoroughly later. Thanks!!

I totally agree with you and it's really great to see the hymn writers agree and stand firm on what the Bible says and what they wrote - a song with strong theology. :) I really respect these guys and LOVE the Getty's music.

What is astounding is that apparently Getty doesn't understand the work of the Cross.

God was not needing "satisfied." He required no "payment." God did not abandon His Son, nor pour out wrath upon Him.

Such doctrinal error is mere foolishness that I am thankful was NOT included in the church's hymnal.

For once the Presbyterian folks stuck to the truth presented in Scriptures over the silly foolishness presented in that ditty.

    THAT is good thinking!

Folks that want to discover more about this problem, go to the thread in which the "penal substitution" is discussed.
