    Hi

Please pray for me because I long to have the gift of tongues so badly!

Biblical tongues are actually known languages. Which tongue would you like to speak in? Rosetta Stone offers several choices.

    Hello and welcome,

Why do you do desire the gift of tongues? I have lived a fulfilled Christian life for 40+ years without. I am grateful the gifts God has given me and try to use them for Him.

I Cor 14:19 Paul tells us "Yet in the church I had rather speak five words with my understanding, that by my voice I might teach others also, than ten thousand words in an unknown tongue."

I have always said that those 5 words would be "Ye must be born again"

Because 1) It's the gift of Spirit 2) Bible encourages us to eagerly desire the gifts 3) It would contribute to my prayers and interaction with God.

1Co 14:22 Thus tongues are a sign not for believers but for unbelievers, while prophecy is a sign not for unbelievers but for believers.

So does that mean that for 40 years my Christian life is less than it should be because I don't speak in tongues?
How would it help you pray and interact with God? Is He not able to hear you and interact with you when we talk to Him in English?

    I did not say that.
Btw have you read that you have not because you ask not?

Just because you have lived so doesnt mean that it is a must for everyone.
    Of course He can.

Are you angry at me that I asked of it?

Speaking in tongues would not add anything to your prayers or interactions with God. Please don't seek gifts that God has not chosen to give you (remember, He is sovereign) just to try to have a better relationship with Him. Use the gifts He has given you.

When eagerly desiring the gifts argument is brought up very few want it to be to prophesy (benefit of others) it is typically an unbiblical definition of 'tongues' and for self (selfish purposes and not for others).

Pursue love, and earnestly desire the spiritual gifts, especially that you may prophesy. 1 Cor. 14:1

    1. Tongues is A gift of the Spirit not THE gift of the Spirit.
    2. For the edification of others not self
    3. No it would not.

There is nothing magical about the gift of tongues. The best way to commune with God is just to read His word and pray.

That's all He needs to give us all we need.

Let me bust out my trusty ULV

    1 Corinthians 12
But one and the same (The Holy) Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually just as He wills.

God chooses what gifts are best for you. His ways are higher than ours.

I've been praying for Evan to get the gift of tongues for years, just so I could see his reaction. As it hasn't happened yet, I'm probably not the one you want praying for you.....

(I'm with blessedwife on this topic. She offered a very biblical answer).

There are a lot of different opinions on tongues. I haven't studied the subject very closely myself, but on the view that it is known languages, I have heard a few testimonies along the lines of someone was witnessing to others who spoke a different language and they didn't even realize they were speaking that person's language at first. (I remember one saying when he did realize it it kinda freaked him out and someone else had to take over for him.) Maybe God will work through you like that, but whatever way He does work through you it will be awesome.

Yes, like the gift that Peter had at Pentecost, where all heard him speak in their own tongue (language) Acts 2:8

Yes, for the edification of others, not self-edification, 1 Cor. 14:1

God already has you, it is already taken care of; Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness. For we do not know what to pray for as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words. Romans 8:26

The bible says in 1 Corinthians 13:8 "where there are tongues, they shall cease."

They have. Revelation, in the forms of tongues, prophecy, and knowledge is now complete.

1 Corinthians 13:10 But when the complete thing comes, then then the partial thing shall be done away.

    Your request is childish.

1 Corinthians 13:11 When I was a child, I spoke as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child: but when I became a man, I put away childish things.

Paul then proves that tongues were already no longer being given in his day.

1 Corinthians 13:13 And now abides faith, hope, and love, these three; but the greatest of these is love.

Note Paul did NOT say "And now abides faith, hope, love, tongues, prophecy and knowledge, these six."

That is because, when Paul wrote 1 Corinthians, the spiritual gifts of tongues, prophecy, and knowledge were no longer being given to new converts.

    You say:
No, tongues is not. The gift is the Holy Spirit Himself, who, according to Christ, will guide you into all truth.
No, it doesn't. The bible says "pursue love, and desire spirituality, but more important that you tell others."
Why? Is your god too stupid to understand English?
