Went to a wholly contemporary service last Sunday. It was in a church right off a major college campus. I can see the appeal of the contemporary services.

More than that, to give it its desired air of spirituality, they served wine and juice from two cups. In the very ordinance which communicates unity, they drive a wedge between those with a conscience toward wine, and those who have none.

But that's okay. The drummer has found his niche.

Maybe I should have said, That's the real point [of their wine and juice.] Not unity, but division.

 

No plates. They had four 'stations,' where an absolute knock-out was holding the loaf, and a preppy guy was holding a chalice of wine, and a common wine glass of juice. As the band played the college students lined up and each would tear a piece from the loaf and dip it in either the wine or the juice.

Then use wine, or use juice, but don't highlight the division.

 

Who's offended? The standard of worship is not offense, but spirit. Who's offended at priestly robes and other Catholic trappings? But my question is, based on biblical principles, What's the point?

Think of the designs of airplanes. It doesn't matter who the manufacturer is. They all look the same, because if they're going to fly, they have to be a certain shape. An engineer can look at a design and say this will or will not fly without being offended. He may even find certain elements to be ridiculous and mock them. It doesn't mean he was offended by them. And if a certain designer gets his feathers ruffled because one who is discerning laughed at the ridiculous features, that's the designer's problem.
