Giving the oath of enlistment

    Giving the oath of enlistment - is that always done for patriotic reasons?
    In my case I "ran away from home" by joining the Army - did not necessarily do it for patriotic reasons...

    Not that I was unpatriotic (I was patriotic long before I considered the military), but I needed a job.

    There many reasons, a way out of town, GI bill, family tradition, conversations with friends closer to my own age who had already served, watching too many war movies...

    I finished my two years of junior college right in the teeth of the Nixon recession of '73. I joined the Coast Guard for the GI Bill. For me, the oath of enlistment, was the same as an oath of office.

    I was in San Diego doing my reserve duty in a Tank Unit at Camp Elliot in 1964... I did my reserve boot in August of 1964 at MCRD... I knew I made a mistake when the DI (Drill Instructor) if you want to call it that introduced himself... I am your Father, your Mother, your Brother and your Sister... In fact I am The Lord God Almighty!:eek:... You are the grass and I'm the lawnmower:eek:... Did I sign on the dotted line and raise my hand?... It there a door out of here?... They got me for 5 years with Vietnam included!... Word to the wise read the fine print before you put your John Hancock on anything... Brother Glen:Biggrin
