We live in a post-Christian society. And, the church itself is becoming post-Christian. The SBC is becoming post-Christian, and some churches are moving away from Christ even faster.

Removing the name "Baptist" reflects their increasingly secular thinking. Leaving the SBC reflects their unwillingness to have even the minimal accountability the SBC provides.

Actually this is not true. Not all Baptist churches change their name for secular thinking. We changed our name to reflect the fact that we no longer were just in our little town but had campuses in other locations as well so "Main Town Baptist" in second town just didn't work as well. So we changed the name.

My comments refer to the now common practice of churches and Christian organizations taking on relatively secular names (naturally, they all deny the obvious motive). This doesn't apply to your Baptist church if it it went from "Main Town Baptist" to "Regional Baptist." But, if your church changed it's name to "Happy Fun Place", then I'm talking about you.

But what if "Regional Baptist" was already taken by a KJVO church and so you decide to go with "Regional Christian Church"?

    That would be fine.

There's an increasing number of churches around here that you'd never know were churches by their name, except their names are too dorky to be anything but a church or a bar, and without the neon Coors sign in the window, that leaves a church (due apologies to the hip new church, the Gathering Spot, with a neon Coors sign in the window).

Actually, the descriptive "Bible Church" grew out of the denominational Fundamentalist\Modernist blood baths. The IFCA (the "home" of many Bible Churches) was founded in 1930.

See, around here, I don't know of any denominational Bible churches. They are all independent.

Independent is the "I" in IFCA. Back in the 30s, good churches and their pastors didn't want to get caught up in the denominational circular firing squads.

These places are loaded with events, events & more events. Easter Egg Hunts, Interpretative dance recitals, Friday Night Movies, Thurs Night Mens Basketball, Ice Cream Socials, Christmas Contatas, Circular Holding Hands Prayer Sessions, Contemporary Christian Music, Christian Fall Hay rides & pumpkin picking..... Yada Yada Yada.

This is what has taken the place of Baptists in my area.

None of these things are bad in and of themselves. Is the Gospel being preached? Are people's lives changed? These are just other stuff - kind of like hymnals and pews. :)

Lets take this a step further . About 3 years ago, Faith Baptist College removed a church from their approved list for students, since the church took out "Baptist" from their name.

This may be the reason that several "Bible churches" in northern Maine's St. John Valley, which is 90%+ Franco-American (and thus inherently nearly all RC), chose that title. The first of these is 50+ years old and has planted three "daughter" churches in nearby communities as well as sending many missionaries around the world. Their doctrine and practice is thoroughly baptistic and has been since they were founded.

The IFCA is a denomination. They have their statement of faith and other rules for their member churches to follow. How are they not a denomination? And, for all I can tell, the letters IFCA don't stand for anything, anymore. The name is IFCA International, not Independent...

Please see the wiki article. The name was changed in 1996 to IFCA International. They are not a denomination in that they are not Presbyterian, Methodist or Baptist.

Nope. Nor does it say to have a steeple, pews, hymnals, baptismals, Sunday school, coffee, an organ or piano and a choir.

    More than likely. It's not the name - it's what's inside. :)

Who chose to change the name? It had to be presbyters or bishops. They're a denomination, no matter how much they chant that they're not. So, my only question: Are they Presbyterians or Episcopalians?
