Any recommendations for Prague? Things to do, restaurants, etc.? Any personal recommendations would be appreciated. Thanks.

    1. Buy a multi-day pass for the subway, buses and trams. It will save you time and money.
    2. When you become tired, board a tram and ride it to the end of the line. You can rest and see parts of the city that most tourists never see.
    3. Restrooms often cost a small fee. This was true at McDonalds and public restrooms.
    4. Beer is cheaper than water are restaurants. I don't like beer, so I paid more.
    5. Prague is a very safe city. But, do be careful on the tram that runs from Malostranska to the castle. Pickpockets love this tram as they know it is often full of tourists. The pickpockets are not violent, but are very good at their trade.
    6. Pickpockets also love the crowds at the old astronomical clock when it strikes on the hour.
    7. Walk a few blocks away from tourist areas to eat and the prices will be much lower.
    8. If you want to pick up a gyro go to the Mustek subway station. Exit and turn toward Old Town Square. There is a gyro shop there. You order through a window and your food is passed out the window to you.
    9. Between Mustek and Old Town Square there is a store Country Life where you can buy otherwise hard to find items, like peanut butter.
    10. Paneria is a chain of sandwich, dessert shops. The sandwiches and other items are good and inexpensive. Also in shops there are sandwiches and subs with the corporate name, Boulevard Crocodile. Their sandwiches are similar, but better, than Subway.
    11. If you are 70 or older you can buy a lifetime pass for the subways, trams and buses. The pass costs less than $2.00. Ask at your hotel which station is nearest the hotel where you can buy these money, time saving cards. You will need your passport and a passport photo. Amazingly these cards are accepted in many other European countries as proof that you are a pensioner and, thus, you are given often senior prices which are lower.
    12. At the airport there is a bus to the end of the Green line, the subway. It is inexpensive. I cannot remember if you can purchase subway, tram and bus passes at the airport or not. The same pass is used on all three modes of transportation. If your hotel is near a subway stop this is much less expensive than going by taxi.
If you have specific questions please ask. I will answer as best I can.

It is a beautiful city. There was almost no damage during WW II, so Prague looks like European cities in centuries past.

Oh, and please do not go to a Starbucks. They are not as good and are more expensive than the Czech coffee houses.

    That's what we've heard.

Thanks -- I agree. When in Rome...

Here is a link showing the Country Life store in Prague. Pan around and see the 360 view. The location is near Old Town Square. You may have to click to open the link in a new tab. I had to do this to view it. The Mustek subway stop is near this location also.

The around the corner vegetarian restaurant is also nice, if vegetarian is your thing.

Prague’s first-ever health-food shop opened in 1991, and is an all-vegan cafeteria and sandwich bar offering inexpensive salads, sandwiches, pizzas, vegetarian goulash, sunflower-seed burgers and soy drinks (food is sold by weight, around 30Kč per 100g). There is plenty of seating in the rear courtyard but it can still get crowded at lunchtime, so go early or buy sandwiches to go.

Just thought of this. Get money through an ATM. You will get a better exchange rate than if you use a money changer.

Remember the bad reputation they had in the Bible? Seems things have not changed that much in. 2000 years.

Thanks for the additional suggestions. I will try to check them out (no pun intended). Yes, I've heard about the money changers, but do wish they used the Euro.

One more question... I may be there on a Sunday and would like to attend church if possible. Do you know of any protestant churches near Old Town?

Just remembered, there were some ATM's that would not accept a card that did not have a chip. Europe has had cards that contain chips for about ten years. I do not know why it took so long here to adopt this technology that made your account information more secure.

I know you were not looking for an answer.
But I am gling to respond since I worked on implementing credit card processing solution for one of the major cards.

The short answer is whenever a dispute arises, the credit card company, merchant, network and buyer enter the arbitration process.
If they can find who did this they go after the fraudelent person, if not the merchant always takes the loss. (cost of doing business).
Stricter regulations and big retail stores have pushed for the chip card.
    Which is good.
But I hate the fact it takes twice as long for it to process compared to the swipe.
Future is ipay and virtual wallets.
    May be bitcoin too ;)

Thank you for all of your recommendations. Unfortunately, I didn't see this until after I arrived home. Prague is indeed a beautiful city, though it was definitely packed with visitors. The language is a bit difficult, though most people (thankfully) spoke English. For those who have never been, here is a picture of the River Vltava with the Prague Castle in the distance.

I know that spot well. I am glad you liked Prague. You are right, Prague is packed with visitors. Even in the winter there are tour groups everywhere. I assume you visited the St. Vitus Cathedral shown in your photo.

Yes, of course. The castle and grounds were amazing. The cathedral was stunning. Thankfully, we were there at the top of the hour and saw the changing of the guard -- very impressive. Also took an evening cruise on the river, which gave you an entirely different view of the city.
