What guidelines would you give to a church in forming a pulpit committee?

    1) How many should be on the committee
    a) should women be on the committee
    b) should teens be on the committee
    c) should the church make an effort to mirror the makeup of the church - ie race, ect?

    2) How should the church attempt to find prospects -ie internet, denomination, ect

    3) Should the committee recommend only one man at a time

    4) Should the committee visit a prospective pastor at his church without his knowledge

    5) How many times should a prospective man preach at your church

    6) What kind of checks should be made? credit, police, ect

    7) How many references should be received
    a) should the church require 2nd or 3rd generation references?

(Note: generation references - example - Prospective pastor give Jack Smith as a reference - Then Jack is asked for 3 people he knows that knows the prospective pastor - One of which is Tom Jones ...... Tom Jones gives Bill Mattox as a reference.....

    Other items????

Not less than 6 nor more than 12.

Yes. He will be their pastor too.

No. They lack the maturity to make such important decisions.

Only those of the human race should be on the committee.

Denomination papers, affiliated colleges and seminaries, etc.

    Yes.

No. Sheep stealing is a sin.

However many is necessary to make a correct decision.

All. Credit. Police. Education. Former ministry.

All of them. But personal references are not usually helpful. Anybody can find somebody to write them a recommendation.

I have no idea what a 2nd or 3rd generation reference is. A recommendation from a man, his father, and his grandfather?

If that is the case - then calling a man who is currently a pastor elsewhere - could be considered sheep stealing!!
The purpose of visiting a pastor at his home church b4 informing him is to give the 2 or 3 members of the committee an ideal of what he is really like - otherwise - he is on his "best behaviour" when preaching at a prospective church.

Come on T- you know what I mean

I edited my OP - to explain what "generational reference is

I would not ask for such. And if somebody called me and asked for a reference for someone I knew I would give it. If they asked for 3 more references from me I would tell them to ask him.

    It certainly is.
I assume you mean black verses white verses brown verses yellow, etc?

Sorry, but I believe "race" is a satanic concept designed to separate people. In my opinion there is only one race on this planet, the Human Race, and the sooner we all start acting like it the better off we will all be. :)
