For those who don't know, like me until this past week, dependents can purchase glasses at the VA.

I paid a little over $400 for my son's glasses and an eye exam last year. I could have paid $45 - 60 for the exam and purchased the same glasses for $40 at the VA.

On a side note, I've ordered (and received) a pair of progressive lens sunglasses. It took about a week (cost about $200, but could have been much less had I chosen another frame).

That seems expensive. Over here you can get a eye test for £10 in one of the supermarkets like Tesco. Sometimes they have an offer for a free test. I think Specsavers charge £10. For single vision specs, they are very reasonably priced frame prices include the lenses. As a senior they give me a 25% discount, or you can have a second pair free, includes prescription sunglasses.

For me the exam is free. But everything else seems over priced when it comes to eye care on the economy.

Online sales are killing brick and mortar stores. I've got two kids in glasses, so I pay for the exam locally but excuse myself when the high pressure sales people show up. Then order online for less.

Your son? You didn’t get him any BCGs, did you? :Biggrin

Exactly. I've been doing this for years now. $400 outfits three family members, two with progressive lenses and all get single vision sunglasses included in that $400.

Only problem: the subsidizer for all the free stuff is $20 trillion and counting in red ink with no apparent remedy.

Let's make more missiles and bomb shelters.

    Even so, come, Lord Jesus.

It's not "free stuff". It is part of a retirement package for which I paid 23 years of my life.

Sorry, I can be really insensitive at 3 a.m. I have trouble with the concept of "Free".

I have issues with my eyes and ears, head to toes actually from 72 years of aging, 22 in uniform. The military has been more good than bad. Getting service connected benefits can be a bureaucratic nightmare. I am still waiting for documents from St. Louis. Persistence and congressional letters has worked. Not sure about the latest crew inside the beltway.

    Sorry again.

No need to apologize. I've had good care when I use the VA, but most of the time I have to use the private sector. In fact, the last time I went to the VA they recommended that I see a civilian doctor for tests (because of the process and time involved at the VA) and just bring the results to the VA. Most of the time I just forego the VA....but I'm starting to like them more than my civilian docs, so this will probably change.

I just worry sometimes that the cost associated with the care of veterans is beginning to look like an unnecessary expense to some - more along the lines of social healthcare or welfare rather than part of a retirement benefit promised to and owed to our veterans (not to you, but some not familiar with the military).
