I find a lot of fundamental Christians admiring Winston Churchill. I also admire Winston Churchill. God used him to save Britain during World War II. It is very clear that he was a man used by God in the history of the world, especially during the late 1930s and 1940s.

But was he a Christian? Did he believe in God? Did he believe in the Lord Jesus Christ?

    I would like to know!

    Hi,

    I am certain he believed in God, in the Church of England sense as he was brought up in a traditional English family. But beyond that I don't know...he certainly refers to God quite often in his speeches;

but also seemed to reflect quite lightheartedly about God also which makes one wonder, nonetheless some of his remarks were clearly tongue in cheek:

Christian or not, I wish we had his ilk in Downing Street again instead of the spin doctors and liars who are a poor excuse for statesmen.

Thankfully, my Lord never left me with the determinative mind, to determine whether this one or the other is a believer or not. My on;y job in life is to be a witness, live for the Lord, and tell forth the gospel.

Certainly he believed in God. The language is not foreign to Anglicans, or for that matter, many other branches of Christendom.

Salvation is of the Lord; He will decide.

Mr Churchill made many of his remarks with a huge cigar in his mouth and probably a shot of brandy burning down his throat. In some circles, that would be enough to condemn him to Hell.

In history, he was the right man at the right time, and I can live with that.

    Cheers,

    Jim

    Jim,
In which "circles" would cigar smoking and a shot of brandy condemn a man to hell? I thought unbelief condemned a man to hell.
But that aside, besides the Bible and Shakespeare, Churchill is the most frequent source for quotations. That right there says alot about the man.
But I must address one issue with you. it seems that every time that the subject of Winston Churchill comes up you always bring up the Tonypandy incident where it is mistakenly cited that Churchill used the military against the striking miners to quell the violence and destruction of property. In fact Churchill was criticized by the Conservatives for not deploying troops sufficienly quickly and by the socialists for using excessive force. Arthur Balfour, leader of the Opposition, led the Conservative attack on the Home Secratary's handling of the crisis. Balfour criticized Churchill for not sending the military and using the police instead. I quote Balfour:

Many of these deplorable occurrences might have been avoided had he not at a critical moment refused to carry out decisively and effectively the measures which he contemplated. Had he not held back the military and not shown some doubt and hesitation at a critical moment, much destruction of property, many unhappy incidents, and many circumstances which all, whatever their opinions, must look upon as a great blot on the procedure of civilised society, might have been wholly avoided.

The forces that Churchill sent were at the request of Chief Constable and the local authorities in the Rhondda Valley.

You might want to read Churchills response to Balfour in the House of Commons 7 February 1911.
You may have gotten your info from the BBC.

    Ps104:

I did not condemn Mr. Churchill to Hell..I said in some circles...particularly Baptist circles, which I did not name either....it was his landmark posture,,cigar and brandy!

On the mines; I went to school in Wales and got my information directly from the miners. On the East London threats, I was there when it happened..Sorry, he threatended to have "the lot shot....."

If you saw my libarary, you would see that I have a great deal of memorabillia about Mr. Churchill...I just think there is another side as well....He was not loved all over England, and I should think the other Brits, Aussies etc will attest to wot I say.

    Cheers,

    Jim

Heck, we don't even know for sure if Geo Washington was a Christian or not. But that knowlege or lack thereof does not in any way detract from these great men.

    Jim,
Every business but two in Tonypandy was busted up and looted by the rioters. What would you have done in this situation?

On Tuesday the 8th November the workmen on strike were paid off by the companies of the Cambrian Combine and proceeded to the Tonypandy Athletic Ground for a mass meeting. The local stipendiary magistrate Lleufer Thomas spoke to the men and read out a message from the Home Secretary who maintained his intent to hold back the soldiers and send only police in to maintain the peace. The tone was conciliatory and was well received by the strikers, promising as it did to arrange meetings with the Board of Trade to resolve the dispute. The miners then formed an orderly procession and proceeded once again to the Glamorgan Colliery, arriving about 4p.m. Within the hour however what was described as 'serious rioting' had once again occurred. Mounted police attempted to disperse the strikers and hand to hand combat between strikers and the police took place lasting over two hours. Finally the police managed to split the strikers into separate groups, some being driven up the valley towards Llwynypia and others down the valley towards Tonypandy. Scores of not hundreds of police and rioters were left injured. It was what happened next that has gone down in history as the Tonypandy Riots. Strikers on being driven to Tonypandy proceeded to smash the shop windows of the town, and also those of a number of private dwellings. Contemporary reports state that of all the shopping district only two shops retained their windows and were not looted by the rioters, one a jewellers which had roller shutters and the other a chemist owned by a former Welsh rugby International. The five constables on duty in Tonypandy at the time, together with dozen reinforcements from the Colliery finally managed to clear the streets. Due to the seriousness of this continued rioting Churchill telegrammed General MacReady stating, 'As the situation appears to have become more serious you should if the Chief Constable or Local Authority desire it move all the cavalry into the district without delay'. Churchill also spoke to Lindsay and MacReady and agreed to send another contingent of 200 Metropolitan policemen leaving London on Wednesday 9th November at 3a.m. However by the time that 150 police arrived at Tonypandy Square at 11p.m. on the Tuesday 8th November the disturbances were over. Although no authentic record exists of casualties of these disturbances, as many of the miners would have refused treatment in fear of being prosecuted for their part in the riots, nearly 80 policemen were injured and over 500 other persons, one Samuel Rhys later dying of his injuries.

Bunyon has a point....but if he just wore a hat, it wouldn't show. Just kidding - Bunyon is right about this.

I remember how shocked I was when I first heard that Ghengis Khan was a great hero to some and continues to be to the Mongols.

Well, all the same, I admire Winston Churchill...and I believe God used him at a crucial hour in the history of the world during the 20th century. God used him as He used Cyrus in the Bible.

I think people need to remember that it wasn't about just the prime ministers faith but also those around him. Donald Trump is a young christian but God has amazing people of God around him. God doesn't choose you because you're educated but for His glory to be seen for like Abraham God had to wait until he could not longer rely on his own flesh for a child. Then Isaac came when he was about 100 yrs old lol. God is in the people around our leader. Donald trump was chosen by God as God appoints leaders and remove called to pray for them.

WINSTON CHURCHILL HAD A MATURE HRISTIAN WHO WROTE MANY OF HIS SPEECHES BECAUSE HE KNEW IT WOULD ENTER USAGE STRENGTH AND BOLDNESS IN PEOPLE.

Superman claimed to be someone he was not? I don't remember that. Nor, on the flip side, do I remember Clark Kent stating he was not Superman. He admitted to having a unique channel of contact with Superman, and it's hard to argue with that.

Is there a reason we have resurrected a 12 year old zombie thread? Please people. Check the dates of the last post before replying. For the most part the people you are replying to are not even here any more.
