MUELLER: Russian Meddling Began Before Trump Was Even A Candidate

Russian attempts to influence the 2016 presidential election began before President Donald Trump even declared his candidacy, special counsel Robert Mueller’s recent indictment of Russian hackers reveals.

The Russian government had a strategic goal to “sow discord in the U.S. political system, including the 2016 presidential election” the indictment reads. The indictment also revealed activity pursued by the Russians to organize political rallies, building partisan social media audiences across the political spectrum, and funding political stunts.

According to Mueller, the Russian government created a sub agency known as the “translator project” which was “focused on the U.S. population and conducted operations on social media platforms including Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and YouTube,” adding that the strategic goal of interfering in the 2016 US election was developed all the way back in May 2014.

Russian internet trolls not only used social media accounts to promote President Donald Trump’s election bid, they also operated accounts supporting the candidacies of Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders and Jill Stein.

Special Counsel Robert Mueller issued an indictment for 13 Russian nationals affiliated with three Russian companies suspected of interfering in the 2016 election. The goal of their campaign was to sow discord in the U.S. political process.

You and the Daily Caller are jumped to conclusions with your headlines and thread.

What he said was, “There’s no allegation, in this indictment, that any American had any knowledge."

Notice the words, "...no allegation in this indictment..." That means that they are not currently making allegations against Americans in this indictment. It does not rule out eventual collusion by Americans in the process. Nor rule out anything else that the Special Counsel is doing or that the probe is complete.

The real story here is that the credibility of our President has been taken down another notch by his dismissiveness and trivialization of the work of the intelligence services (which includes the military). By all accounts, President Trump was gravely wrong about this.

I'm glad to see the Mueller investigation getting even more results than they previously had. Apparently they picked up another cooperating witness in the process.

Months and months of this, and all Mueller could find was some Russian trolls, and a couple of them were in the US in 2014?

    Weak, really weak.

Uh, who said the investigation was over?

All indications are that there is a lot more to come.

didn't say it was over, what I said was if this is all Mueller could come up with, a handful of Russian internet trolls , in all these many months, it was a very weak case,

Well, that's not jumping to conclusions, that's what Rosenstein said - of course he meant this particular indictment, but that doesn't necessarily mean there will be others to follow or that this is the last word from RM.

Mueller had to/wanted to prove collusion, all this is is proving the existence of Russian trolls. I doubt all this is over, either, but this is probably Mueller's exit off of Collusion Drive and now he'll make a left turn onto Trump Financial Boulevard.

I love how people like Mitch go back and forth on Mueller whenever it suits their agenda and rail against him when it doesn’t. It’s so blatantly hilarious. We go from witch hunt! WitchHunt! to quoting him as the gospel when it suits our political biases. It’s a great experiment to see play out in real time.

What are you basing your timeline off of and what is the appropriate amount of time to “uncover something”. We are peeling back an onion and to say it has failed to produce anything is far from the truth.

I wouldn't call it "my" timeline but I was referring to when RM was appointed Special Counsel last year, although the FBI was investigating this back in the summer of 2016. You could've peeled a lot of onions by now.

Let's look and see what it produced today:

13 Russians, 3 groups indicted in election meddling probe

that's just trolling, you see things like this every time you are on the internet. Not even close to collusion, which is what they were going for. ,

You are basing everything off of your own assumptions of what they have, what they know, what direction they are going and again your own personal gut feeling of what their timeline should be.

What experience do you have that dictates when something should or shouldn’t happen in an investigation of this size and scope?

I’m going to remain patient because I feel it is important.

This was an event we became aware of today. That’s it. It isn’t the fruit of the entire investigation or a signaling of anything more than what it is. This isn’t over and this isn’t the final result.

I doubt few have had experience with a massive investigation, other than maybe those on the Warren Commission, 9-11 and Watergate and Ken Starr. It's the closest to Whitewater from what I see, Starr couldn't get big Whitewater fish, so he went onto something else.

It really doesn't matter what I think here but they would have some proof of collusion by now if it happened.

I hope you would have been as patient if Mueller was investigation some politician you liked. Your turn, how long do you think he should keep investigating nothing? I think he's pivoting.

Going in circles. Why do you think they would have had something “by now?” What possible information do you have that leads you to this timetable in your head?

I would be patient and will be patient if there are other politicians that get sucked in. Democrats? Why not?

Nice loaded question. How long do I think they investigate nothing? I hope they spend zero time investigating nothing. That isn’t what is happening here though so as long as they keep getting leads it should go on. Also, you have again assumed much about what they know and are investigating.

This is so silly. They found a few Russians trolling the internet? I know of British people (personally) that supported Trump online and bashed HRC non-stop. They even printed bumper stickers and handed them out to us and a bunch of other people.

Better call them and them know that the British interfered in the election!

I'm shocked you anti-Trumpers are still keeping this alive. Jesus Christ could tell you he was not guilty and it wouldn't matter.

No wonder the FBI missed the school shooter--they were spending millions of dollars on this political junk. Rosenstein does not have enough honor to resign so he should be fired. No one but the federal government would hire him.

Sigh, the you know the FBI is capable of focusing on more than thing right. With different people in different departments handling countless cases right? Like, surely you don’t think this is just one guy in his office right handling everything.

The two sides to the Mueller investigation discussion, condensed.

One side says there is nothing to find; the other side says just wait--the floodgates are going to open. Neither side really knows what leads Mueller is following.

Patience is needed...(though I admit I'm running low on it.)
