In 1864 General Sherman made his famous March to the Sea.

    During this offensive advance: "

    [IMG]Sherman's March to the Sea
"Sherman had terrorized the countryside; his men had destroyed all sources of food and forage and had left behind a hungry and demoralized people"

"Sherman, however, burned or captured all the food stores that Georgians had saved for the winter months."

If a commander took an offensive like that today - would he be convicted of a war crime?

Yes he would be charged with war crimes, because we no longer fight wars to win them. Sherman was a military genius. Even though he was on the other side, he fought the war the way it had to be fought to bring victory to his side.

Salty, have you been over to see the grave of the captured Confederate horse in Wilson, N.Y.?

Actually if one so desires "war crimes" are relatively easy to uncover in any war when the path of the military is followed.

    IMO.

Yes. Rules on how to kill people are kind of stupid.

I doubt if any on ANY victory side have ever been prosecuted for war crimes. That's reserved for the losers, to destroy any morale left to the defeated people.

Also, the military victors write the history. That's why there are few records of the Anabaptists & other early non-RCC Christians.
