I have trouble with sarcasm...

When it comes to discerning whether someone is being serious or actually being sarcastic with their remarks on a message board like this, I sometimes have difficulty telling the difference.

Does anyone else here struggle with the same issue?

*bracing myself for any sarcastic comments regarding this post *

It can be difficult to discern when written, particularly by someone you don’t know personally.

I can’t remember any particular passage but sarcasm written by biblical authors is also often missed, misunderstood and misinterpreted.

Yes, I have no way of knowing with the written word, because I have no body language, tone of voice, facial expression, etc. to help me make that determination!

New translations should include smilies to indicate things like sarcasm. ;)

I cannot relate to the OP. I have never been sarcastic in my entire life.

Well, you see, I feel I can relate to what you just said.

One might say that the fact that I am not a sarcastic individual myself is the very source of my problem.

In other words, since I cannot relate to the sarcastic mind set, I'm quite often unable to perceive its intent or existence in the writings of others.

And you are sure I was not being sarcastic in my previous post? Not knowing me, you took me at face value. I was being sarcastic. Sometimes you know and other times you can only imply. When unsure, respond with grace. It will save you an apology.

Jesus taught our yes should mean yes and our no should mean no, so perhaps we should actually say what we mean, and not try to hide meanness behind humor.

At times Scarism is meant to make a point, then what you can do
is to ask a yes/no question.
For example : We might as well stop having Sunday school in this church!
A) So you are saying that the kids should only attending morning worship service?
(he says) did you think I was being serious
(you) Well, you were very convincing.

Yeah, kinda like Elijah with the prophets of Baal. Hint for those who need it: No, that mean ol' Elijah did not think Baal was real, much less sleeping, deep in thought, on a journey, or busy on the toilet (see 1 Kings 18:27).
