    Calvinism Fact Sheet | Monergism

    by Joel Barnes

Below are explanations of TULIP (an acronym representing Calvinism’s main tenets) followed by supporting biblical texts. Remember that not all supporting texts will explicitly teach a given tenet. In such instances, the tenet of Calvinism in question will be, to borrow from an old confession, “by good and necessary consequence deduced from” the supporting texts.

    Total Depravity (or Total Inability)

When Calvinists speak of man as being totally depraved, they mean that man’s nature is corrupt, perverse, and sinful throughout. The adjective “total” does not mean that each sinner is as totally or completely corrupt in his actions and thoughts as it is possible for him to be. Instead, the word “total” is used to indicate that the whole of man’s being has been affected by sin. The corruption extends to every part of man, his body and soul; sin has affected all (the totality) of man’s faculties - his mind, his will, etc.

As a result of this inborn corruption, the natural man is totally unable to do anything spiritually good; thus, Calvinists speak of man’s “total inability.” The inability intended by this terminology is spiritual inability; it means that the sinner is so spiritually bankrupt that he can do nothing pertaining to his salvation. The natural man is enslaved to sin; he is a child of Satan, rebellious toward God, blind to truth, corrupt, and unable to save himself or to prepare himself for salvation.

I think Total Depravity was poorly thought through.

I would argue if MAN had NOT FALLEN, He would still be incapable of doing anything Good independently apart from God.

That ultimately everything is incapable of doing anything Good in the eyes of God without God.

I think "uncorrupted" man is being given way too much credit, As if he can obtain salvation independently and is independently perfect apart from God.

Man by nature is totally depraved and dead spiritually, he cant even believe in or come to the True Christ for all Salvation. Jesus says Jn 6:65

65 And he said, Therefore said I unto you, that no man can come unto me, except it were given unto him of my Father.

This speaks to mans inability !:

I read it you could have been perfect in everyway NOT totally depraved, doesn't mean "you can come unto me"

I don't agree with this snobby MAN-CENTRED view.

I don't see a matter of capacity but of direct permission, Of which is an answered request when one follows their God given good conscience.

65 And he said, Therefore said I unto you, that no man can come unto me, except it were given unto him of my Father.

This makes no mention of abilities. It directly states given unto him of my father.

The CONDITION is God wills it. Not that you are a saint, made better, elect, perfected.

IT is because GOD, not this MAN - CENTERED Calvinist view of self superiority.

Best proof is just self evident direct. Like if you told me YOU could not believe Christ before.

Rather than dressing up why you believe after the fact.

I’m saying the best story is your own.
    Before it gets dressed up.

I’ve never heard one true story follow the Calvinist order of salvation.

If for for one second I went oblivious to God to mentally forced to believing I’d be hopping up and down like a madman letting everyone know what happened to me. Direct experience with God.

instead I’m getting a bunch of peer pressured cracked cowards who can’t think for themselves who worry about having a story just to fit in and when we follow their story it ain’t nothing like their theology insists how it happens.

I have yet to meet totally depraved Joe minding his own business not seeking God never heard of Jesus and all the sudden...he thinksTULIP.

Every Calvinist I’ve met was a previously non-Calvinist Christian and still keep a non Calvinist testimony of conversion.

They try to dress it up almost always fail to follow their ordo salutis.

It doesn’t show that at all. It is only assumed. In fact the clear context of ch 6 is the Jews not the whole world. In Calvinist eisegesis it gets misapplied.

A spiritually blind man who has no ability has no need to be further blinded again nor would it be necessary for Jesus to speak parabolically so that some could not understand if they were not elected according to Calvinist definition of election.

First of all in my Baptist faith, it would not have been right... We would have been looking for a new Pastor and these two could have found another church... If he treats his personal life like that how would he treat the church?... Instead of looking for a life of ease, they both should have dropped down on their knees... We all have financial responsibilities and we pray to the Lord to help us through them but we all answer to our stewardship in the Lord... I come from a church where preachers hold a full time job and preach too!... Check your Bible when The Apostle Paul wanted to supplement his income he mended tents.

Acts 18:3 And because he was of the same craft, he abode with them, and wrought: for by their occupation they were tentmakers.

Btw... I know of a preacher that started preaching at the age of fifteen and preached until he passed away last year at the age of eighty... His occupation was, he was a Texas dirt farmer but his calling was preaching the word of God!... Brother Glen:)

Name one thing that can please God that does not have God as it’s source.

    Can you please God?
