The Ten commandments state "Thou Shalt not Kill" (KJV)

Does that mean that we should not kill anyone - even in a war or for self-protection?

If a person is totally a CO - would he be wrong by joining the military as - say a medic - and not carry
a firearm - as he patches up the wounded?

Would you want a CO to be a medic in your unit - knowing that he would not take up arms?

Should a Pastor be allowed to join the service as a chaplain if he is a CO
Since Chaplains are not authorized to carry a weapon - should a Chaplains Asst be a CO?

Any other thoughts on these issues?

Okay - lets fire off some good responses

With military being mentioned, my first thought for CO is commanding officer. That does not fit the context. I am sure I ought to know, but what is "CO"?

Most English translations (39 out of 53) translate Exodus 20:13 as a command not to murder. Thus nothing in the bible indicates using lethal force under the color of governmental authority is sinful.

But on the other hand, the government should not coerce a persons to use lethal force against their will.

When you study Hebrews 11, note that the last five names listed were people who used lethal force, presumably in accordance with their will.

The Hebrews 11 list makes a very good point.

Is there no commandment of Jesus to leave military service?

Ok stay in the service but turn the other cheek?

    But I say unto you,
    That ye resist not evil:
but whosoever shall smite thee on thy right cheek,
turn to him the other also.
    Matthew 5:39

    Love your enemies?

But I say unto you, Love your enemies,
    bless them that curse you,
do good to them that hate you,
and pray for them which despitefully use you,
    and persecute you;
    Matthew 5:44

I can't even do that on this forum.

Then there is John the Baptist:

And the soldiers likewise demanded of him, saying,
    And what shall we do?
    And he said unto them,
Do violence to no man, ...
    Luke 3:14

I was watching "Sgt York" He was saved in his mid 20's or so. He joined the Church of Christ of Christian Union. When Drafted he claimed CO status - but was refused because the denomination was rather new and had no written statement that killing was against church doctrine.

According to the movie - (of which the vast majority was based on fact) York went home on leave to talk to his pastor. He also talked to the base chaplain. He finally decided to take up arms. Of course, once in battle, he became a hero by knocking out machine gun nests and capturing well over 100 POW's. He was awarded the Medal of Honor.

So if the Govt had not forced York into the Army - Hundreds of Allies may have been KIA by those German Machine guns.

16 There are six things which Jehovah hateth; Yea, seven which are an abomination unto him:
    17 Haughty eyes, a lying tongue, And hands that shed innocent blood;
18 A heart that deviseth wicked purposes, Feet that are swift in running to mischief,
19 A false witness that uttereth lies, And he that soweth discord among brethren. Prov 6

Think Hebrew refers to Murder, as the Lord Himself ordered killing in times of war for israel against her enemies!

The bible presents three views of defending ourselves and loved ones:
    1) Acting on our own accord, we are to turn the other cheek
    2) Acting under the authority of the local church, we are to defend God's word.
    3) Acting under the authority of government, we are to protect ourselves, our loved ones, and our community.

Ok three points but no verses.
I have not even attempted to memorize the bible so verses to back your point would be helpful.
    Thank you.

I don't believe York could've done what he did except the Lord be with him.

You mentioned turn the other cheek without references.
Since our views differ, why not address the views?

Do you claim you do not know the church is to protect God's Word from falsehoods?

    Consider this link:

Or perhaps you do not know government does not bear the sword for nothing? Romans 13:4

    From the Link:
...to carry out the Great Commission
...The main purpose for the church’s existence is to evangelize the world and build up believers.
...1. The Church Exists to Preach the Gospel and Make Disciples (teach) of All Nations

Are you ignoring the purpose of the church to protect God's word?
To fight (with words) for the truth of the gospel?

I idea is Sargent York did good, saved lives, thus coercing him into military is justified. But that idea, IMO, is bogus.

So if a robber came up - and you had a chance to kill him - but you did not
and he ended up killing your wife and 5 kids -

are you saying you did the right thing?
