    Strangely, after reading through the article I was unable to find the answer in it...

    Ultimately, the Lord chose Jacob for His glory and to show him His favor and mercy.
    He chose the patriarchs for much the same reason.

    That is where Romans 9:13-24 comes in, as well as many other passages.
    God chose a physical nation of people for His glory, just as He chooses a spiritual nation of people for His glory.
