A hymn written by Isaac Watts. (in common meter)

John 3:3-8 Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God. Nicodemus saith unto him, How can a man be born when he is old? can he enter the second time into his mother's womb, and be born? Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be born again. The wind bloweth where it listeth, and thou hearest the sound thereof, but canst not tell whence it cometh, and whither it goeth: so is every one that is born of the Spirit.

    "Regeneration"

    1. Not all the outward forms on earth,
Nor rites that God has giv'n,
Nor will of man, nor blood, nor birth,
Can raise a soul to heav'n.

    2. The sov'reign will of God alone
    Creates us heirs of grace,
Born in the image of his Son,
    A new peculiar race.

    3. The Spirit, like some heav'nly wind,
Blows on the sons of flesh,
    New-models all the carnal mind,
    And forms the man afresh.

    4. Our quicken'd souls awake and rise
    From the long sleep of death;
On heav'nly things we fix our eyes,
    And praise employs our breath.

Wow. I'm surprised. I've searched two Old Baptist Hymnals and YouTube and can't find this one by Isaac Watts. Would love to hear it. What melody fits it?

I like to use the melody to "How Sweet the Name of Jesus Sounds", which is also used for "All Things Work Out For Good".

Can also use "There is a Fountain Filled With Blood".

I was a song leader acapella in our Old/ Line/Old School Primitive Baptist Church for 35 years... Like kyredneck who goes to a similar church in Kentucky... I also have never seen this song by Isaac Watts but I do love the words... But if I sang that song I would repeat the last line twice, and sing the song slow, no need to rush a song like that... It's not a marching to Zion song... Not upbeat more soothing and peaceful... Take a listen Ken and kyredneck too, who will think he's home with our people... Brother Glen:)

I'm very familiar with the song, it's popular with the Old Baptists here, gets requested a lot.

Tried to sing the song Ken posted but knowing the tune and the song almost by heart, it easy to get the two mixed up... I agree with kyredneck the Old Primitive Baptist I grew up on the West Coast in California, How Sweet The Name Of Jesus was very popular and requested often too... Brother Glen:)

At Grace Baptist we sing that melody for various songs in common meter at a tempo about halfway between the YouTube video I posted and the audio that you posted.

I'm used to singing it a certain way as our congregation did too but I'm sure that of the different church you visit the song maybe sung different... I guess among our people its the spiritual mood that determines the tempo... In a way it is humorous and in a way that is their way... You think our tempo is somewhat slow, then you've never been to a Black Primitive Baptist Meeting, every two words they sing and hold, then sing two more and do the same thing... Its the same almost with every song they sing... Nothing wrong with that... Not the hepped gospel songs that some other churches sing in worship... I can't drag it out like they do... But preach!!!... As they say "Lord have Mercy!!!"... Enough of my memories!... Brother Glen:)

Btw... I just realize that I can't say that about all Black Primitive Baptist as I'm only relating my experience.
