I remember back in the early 1970’s when the magazine, SCIENTIFIC AMERICAN first published the full genetic code for a virus. It was about 3 pages of text; viruses are rather simple things. It was amazing!

Beginning in the 1990’s through to just last year scientists, working in the Human Genome Project accomplished the full sequencing of a human being… more than 3 billion letters!!!

So by this time we know quite a bit about the variety that occurs among something as simple as a virus.

Similar to cell-based life forms, viruses also undergo the evolutionary process of natural selection, viruses change as they react to various stimuli.

Different types of viruses can also inter-mix genetic material between themselves to form unique hybrids. This is one way of how new viruses develop.

So to answer your question, viruses evolve over time; they change over time, responding to environmental elements that they encounter.
