    2 Timothy 2:15-18 (NASB)
Be diligent to present yourself approved to God as a worker who does not need to be ashamed, accurately handling the word of truth. But avoid worldly and empty chatter, for it will lead to further ungodliness, and their talk will spread like gangrene. Among them are Hymenaeus and Philetus, who have gone astray from the truth,

Here we see we are to be "diligent" to accurately handle the "word of truth." Do we need to hold a man-made degree in Greek to study and share the results of our study? Or do we need to possess "Gnostic knowledge" bestowed in accredited schools? Do we believe in the "priesthood of believers" or in the "priesthood" of Greek speakers or Latin speakers or Hebrew speakers?

Do we need a "Phd" in Greek to use a "Lexicon" written in English, or use an "Exhaustive Concordance" written in English or a "Reverse Interlinear" written in English? Or could we simply use our discipleship training on how to study God's word?

When we see claims by those who apparently do not study that you need a degree to study and share, beware such views are the antithesis of Christ's teachings.

    Luke 8:15 (NASB)
“But the seed in the good soil, these are the ones who have heard the word with a good and virtuous heart, and hold it firmly, and produce fruit with perseverance.

Are we open to the message of God's word, and can be "hold it firmly" without careful study so we are not blown about by every wind of doctrine?

How are we to "make disciples" teaching them "all Christ commanded" if we have not learned what those commands are? Do we thirst for the pure word of God, or are we happy to walk in the furrows of other people?

In 2 Timothy 2:15, we see that the Greek word translated as "be diligent" by the NASB, is also translated as "study." And in other verses the same Greek word is translated as "be eager" and "make every effort."

No, we do not need a degree to study the Bible and use the tools created by experts in their fields. We should also be very aware of our limitations and not make bold claims that experts did a terrible job when we have not been trained in their field of expertise. We should humbly admit that our studies are incomplete and lacking when we attempt to interpret the Bible and use resources that experts created for we who are amateurs in that field.

Are we to tolerate false teachers because those under their influence say they are "experts?" Nope

Do you need to be an "expert" to read a NET Bible footnote concerning Revelation 13:8? Nope

Do you need to be an "expert" to compare and contrast versions of the same verse in say the NIV and NASB? Nope

When we find that these "experts" disagree with those "experts" do we throw up our hands and give up or are we to study to show ourselves approved? You do not need to be a "rocket scientist" to grow in understanding by study of God's word, only thirsty!

    Who wrote the footnote?
Who did the translation work for each version?
Were these people uneducated and unknowledgeable of the original language? Is there a linguistic reason why there are differing synonyms being used? If so, how do we know? Who do we turn to as an expert who can explain it to us? Who wrote the Concordances, the lexicons and helps for people who don't know how to read the original languages?

You can slice it and dice it anyway you wish, but to imagine that we can do a better job of interpreting the Greek to English is arrogantly laughable.

So what teaching is being disagreed on here? There can be more than one. But to deal properly each point needs to be dealt with one at a time.

No one said students of scripture can do a better job than all the experts. However when a group of experts disagree with an agenda driven mis-translation such as the ESV and RSV treatment of Revelation 13:8, we can side with the NKJV, NASB, NET and LEB.

Bottom line, those who apparently do not know how to study are proclaiming we are incapable of study. Utter nonsense, and a denial of the very words of Christ.

When study is said to only be worthwhile by those with degrees, and we should just accept all their differing views, you know hogwash is being sprayed across the forum.

    Exodus 18:15 (NASB)
Moses said to his father-in-law, “Because the people come to me to inquire of God."

Question, if we study God's word, are we not "inquiring of God?" Or should we just accept what the Priests tell us the Latin Bible says.

    Deuteronomy 13:12-14
“If you hear in one of your cities, which the LORD your God is giving you to live in, anyone saying that some worthless men have gone out from among you and have seduced the inhabitants of their city, saying, ‘Let’s go and serve other gods’ (whom you have not known), then you shall investigate, search out, and inquire thoroughly.

Question, if we are barred from investigating which biblical view is found in scripture, are we not following "other gods?"

If you are referring to me, you are making a false statement. I never said study was only worthwhile for those with degrees.

What I have stated is that you are, very apparently, an amateur at understanding Biblical Greek. You do not even realize that all of those “experts” that you dismiss out of hand have spent decades of their lives studying Biblical languages, writing papers and submitting them for peer review. There is nothing better to bring humility into your life than allowing other scholars to critique your work.

If they disagree, they will explain in detail why they disagree. They won’t say “utter nonsense”, “false doctrine” and dismiss the argument out of hand, which is what you do, proving you don’t understand Biblical Greek.

You show no humility as you approach God’s Word. You show no respect for those that disagree with you.

You are the one that comes with an agenda on one shoulder and a chip on the other.

And people have addressed your posts in detail on many occasions, only to received the much used “utter nonsense” as if by saying it, you can make it true.

    peace to you

More material false statements such as "you dismiss out of hand" experts. What I do is compare "experts" that offer differing views, and accept their well considered position such as found in the NET bible footnotes concerning Revelation 13:8.

Thus I am guilty of adhering to the biblical command to "investigate, search out, and inquire thoroughly."

Do you need to be an "expert" to read a NET Bible footnote concerning Revelation 13:8? Nope

Do you need to be an "expert" to compare and contrast versions of the same verse in say the NIV and NASB? Nope

    No one has said this.
You are choosing to interpret what others have said and thus make a felonious statement.

What I have stated, is that those who have dedicated their lives to reading and translating greek into other languages are far more capable of translation work than an amateur with no training in translation work.

To brush these people off with the sweep of a hand and claim the are "agenda driven" is silly on your part. It becomes clear that it is you who has the agenda and thus you reject what doesn't fit into your own agenda.

When two experts hold differing views, one and perhaps both are wrong. The choice of one view over another view is not "translation work" as both views are expressed in English. No one is brushing all the experts off, but to deny sometimes some experts are obviously wrong is without merit. Clearly the ESV mistranslation of Revelation 13:8 (as well as the NLT) is agenda driven. This is not only my "opinion" but the opinion of the vast majority of translators.

When we have heard the word, how do we with a good and virtuous heart "hold it firmly?" Do we let it drift away like an insignificant memory, or do we commit to live by it according to our understanding? For example we are to disciple others, teaching them all Christ commanded. How can we teach what we have not studied and learned ourselves?

Do we read a verse and say to ourselves, well it might mean this or it might mean that, so lets move on and leave that one for another day? Is that how a faithful servant of Christ would act?

I take it that the question is whether it is the Book of Life that was written from the foundation of the world, or the Lamb that was slain from the foundation of the world. Will you tell us, please, why you think it is one or the other? Is there a variation in the texts or is there some other reason for your preference?

Only the OLD Kings Commissioned Bible that didn't have the more complete Greek documents we have today? Do you think you can drink poison and be fine?

The OKCB is one God certainly has used to redeem English speaking rebels, but it's hardly the only translation to do so. However, keep reading the OKCB if that's your preference.

Well, if you are reading and comparing, no need for formal study.

However, if you post in a public’ forum your repeated assertion that certain passages are better understood with different definitions of Greek Words and phrases… it would be important to show some expertise in your knowledge of Biblical Greek.

And you haven’t done that. In fact, just the opposite. Your posts concerning Biblical Greek demonstrate limited understanding at best.

Couple that with your lack of humility and inability to accept any type of criticism and the result is threads that edify no one and accomplish nothing.

    peace to you
