    What music do you use for your Sunday morning services?
    Any differences for Sun night and/or Mid week service?

    We sing the old gospel of Christ-based hymns, and hymns from Joseph Iron's Zion's Hymns, and other hymns that are used for the "call to worship" by various folks, such as this one by William Gadsby:

    1. Mercy speaks by Jesus’ blood;
    Hear and sing, ye sons of God;
    Justice satisfied indeed;
    Christ has full atonement made.

    2. Jesus’ blood speaks loud and sweet;
    Here all Deity can meet,
    And, without a jarring voice,
    Welcome Zion to rejoice.

    3. Should the law against her roar,
    Jesus’ blood still speaks with power,
    “All her debts were cast on me,
    And she must and shall go free.”

    4. Peace of conscience, peace with God,
    We obtain through Jesus’ blood;
    Jesus’ blood speaks solid rest;
    We believe, and we are blest.

    (Tune: "Depth of Mercy")

    Are the songs in heaven hymns or contemporary Christian music? It seems, from the Revelation, that it's neither.

    But, to answer the OP, the church I attend sings mostly newer songs that teach theology, however, they sometimes pick a hymn or two.

    Actually that is the criticism of most CCM - that they do not teach theology, rather many just glorify the individual and/or feel good songs.

    Music is an act of worship

    worship means to tell God how great and glorious He is

    some songs are better than others in worship

    Holy Holy Holy vs God is so good

    which one is better as a worship song?

    immortal Invincible God only Wise vs in the garden

    which one is more worshipful?

    At our Church we typically sing

    A sing in general about God

    see above

    one about Christ and/or His atonement

    At Calvary

    And can it be

    a song about the Church or a song that challenges us

    the Church’s one foundation

    lead on O along Eternal

    we also sing 3-4 choruses

    yes, our service last about 1.25?

    we also read at least 2 additional passages to the sermon passage and recite:

    either

    the Apostles Creed

    the 10 Commandments

    the Lords Prayer

    etc

    We do not have choir, nor do we have “Specials”

    we believe that the assembling of Gods people for worship is about us “Worshipping Together”

    We have the Sermon passage

    We also rotate what we read ie

    we cover different genres

    we are always reading a passage from the Gospels. Remember it’s about Christ. There will be 2-4 main points about the reading which demonstrate that the sayings of Jesus are not just pithy saying, but mean to convey something deeper

    we read 10 chapters in Psalms then Spend 3-4 months or so reading Maybe a Minor Prophet and Ruth, the 10 more Psalms

    the 3rd reading can be an OT or a NT reading depending on the sermon or just a wild hair about what to read

    In 3 yrs, you can cover about 20-30% of the OT and about 1/2 or so of the new

    some chapters take 2-3 weeks to read through depending how deep you want to go

    We sing the song in the "call to worship", then there is the reading of a lengthy passage of Scripture, then one of the male members leads a prayer, then another hymn is sung, then the pastor brings a message from God's Word(usually around 45 minutes or so in length), and then there is a closing prayer by the pastor or one of the male members. Usually takes around 50-55 minutes.

    Before that we have Bible study(around 45 minutes in length) in which the pastor does a verse-by-verse study of a book, currently Ephesians, which will take a long, long time. We just finished the book of Hebrews and it took about three years.

    Hmmm

    One concern of CCM is that they can be a "7-11 song
    ie - you sing 7 verses - 11 times - (or something like that)

    BUT
    doesn't Trad music have some "7-11
    For example - The song "Tell it to Jesus"
    Each verse has "Tell it to Jesus" twice -
    and then the chorus repeats it 4 times

    So - if you sing all four verses - "Tell it to Jesus" is sung 19 times!

    Is there really a difference?

    I have heard that there are "hymns" which are less "chorus-y" and deeper theologically and there are "gospel songs" which are more "chorus-y" and have less depth theologically.

    For example, your post above references a song that would be considered a "gospel song" and not a "hymn".

    That’s my point exactly

    some songs don’t need to be sung in worship

    fire away

    Dont want to get this too far off OP -
    BUT my pet peeve is that (only) music is worship.
    The entire service is worship
    Thus the Worship Pastor is the Senior Pastor -
    NOT the music pastor!

    Correct, but when it comes to worship, we lose sight in the music category

    music is not about what makes us feel good

    music is about what is acceptable to God

    Some hymns, and some more contemporary worship music.

    We really like Sovereign Grace, Red Mountain church and City Alight. They all produce good, theologically deep music.

    Just to clarify, most of our choruses were from the Psalms
