The non-denominational group we belonged to several years ago (led by a retired missionary couple) placed emphasis on scripture memorization. At the beginning of each meeting the congregation would stand and read aloud selected scripture (KJV) which changed quarterly(?). It's amazing how effective that was with memorization, and as a worship service. 'Uncle Eli' (his parents were German Mennonite immigrants) had the entire books of Romans and Hebrews memorized.

Some texts we memorized were Psalms 1, Psalms 19, John 1, John 3, Colossians 3, 2 Timothy 2, 2 Timothy 3.
