Biden said he would run for again if Trump gets the GOP nomination (I think he already said he was running anyway).

The "if" would make since as Biden and Trump are very close in unpopularity (Trump doing a little better than Biden). Biden would have the best chance running against Trump than many other GOP politicians.

BUT my question is Biden running.

I know the DNC cannot stop Biden from running. But can they choose another nominee (Biden running apart from the DNC)?

I ask because I could see Trump, if not being nominated, running anyway.

It would be kinda interesting to see a non-Trump GOP candidate, a non-Biden DNC Candidate, Trump, and Biden running as independents or libertarians...

Does the DNC have to run Biden?

Yes, if he wins the nomination at the Democratic Party National Convention in 2024.

The Libertarian Party will nominate its presidential candidate at its national convention from May 24-26, 2024. I think that I can say with a great degree of certainty that neither Donald Trump nor Joe Biden will be the LP presidential nominee. I am quite aware that the leadership of the LP, since being taken over by the Mises Caucus last year, has flirted a little with the Alt Right, but it would be a total betrayal of libertarian principles if the LP were to nominate either Trump or Biden.

Biden is “running” anywhere. Every time he tries, he stumbles and falls. For Biden, his mental decline may be so overwhelming in the next 8 months, the Dems may try to force him out. He will never go willingly, imo.

The Dems were praying DT would be the nominee in 2016. They lost. No doubt they believe their own hype, that DT will “destroy democracy”, which is projecting exactly what the Dems are attempting to do.

    Neither will run as Independents.

    Peace to you

That's what I was wondering (if he has to "win" the nomination or if as sitting POTUS it is a given that he will be the candidate). I was wondering who made that decision - the DNC or Biden.

Also, is it too late for the DNC to start with candidates?

There are state deadlines for getting on the ballot for their primaries. So if somebody wanted to run in the primaries, they probably needed to have gotten in by late October or maybe late November at the latest. The Iowa caucuses and the New Hampshire primary are only about a month away.

Each party has “delegates” that commit to a candidate. At the convention, these delegates cast votes for the candidate of their choice. Once a candidate gets enough votes, they become the nominee.

The last serious challenge to a sitting POTUS for the nomination of the party was Reagan challenged Ford in 1976 (repubs) and Kennedy challenged Carter in 1980 (Dems)

I think we will see Biden/Quomo vs Trump/Scott.

Quomo? There is no way Harris is pushed out for VP. Biden is already losing ground with his base.

Scott is a possibility, but I think DT is planning something unexpected, something that will catch everyone off guard. That is his style. I wouldn’t be surprised if he picks someone outside politics. What about Elon Musk?

    peace to you

    Is Harris popular with Democrats?

It seems that, if Biden is running, the most important thing may be selection of his VP.

So the DNC candidates are Biden, Phillips and Williamson, I take it. And if Biden doesn't win the primary he isn't the DNC nominee (and won't run independently because he's a "party man".... not the fun kind of "party" but the old crooked kind).

It’s the optics of replacing the first female, African American VP with an old white guy. The Dems are all about identity politics.

The only way they could pull off a VP switch is if they nominated minority trans man drag Queen (male thinks he’s female) that had a uterus transplant for sole purpose of getting pregnant so he could the first male to have an abortion.

Then, VP would be up for grabs.

    peace to you

In 2016 both the Dems and Repubs nominated the candidate most likely to be defeated. HRC might've won had she not labeled about 1/4 of the electorate as "deplorable" and worse, "irredeemable". Can the D's and R's conventions repeat that 2016 kind of nomination result?

No. They can run Hillary. Then we'd all be happy, right?
