I have noticed that "The End of the Spear" (a story about 5 missionaries murdered by savage indians in the jungles of S. America 50 years ago) will be coming to theaters January 20th. This was previewed by a select audience of pastors and religious leaders in our community in December.
Did any of you preview the film, and what was your opinion, if so?

All I have seen are previews and marketing plans. In all the previews I have seen, I did not hear Christ or God mentioned once, so I am not sure of it.

I remember when this happened and it shocked the world at the time.

Here's the trailer for the movie:

And here's the story about Nate Saint, Jim Elliott, and the others:

They truly were martyrs for the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

Okay, but did anyone else catch F.L.T's interview of the director PLUS a member of the tribe?

I don't know about the movie but it just really gets on my nerves with all the marketing that goes on today throughout evangelicalism. I go into a Berean Christian Bookstore the other day and they have the End of Spear book. THey have EOS tee shirts, EOS ball caps, EOS necklaces, along with other EOS stuff. One of the ball caps was a camoflouge kind of deal. It had that famous quote from either Nate Saint of Jim Elliot I forget which IT is something like "He is a fool to gain what he cannot keep only to lose what he cannot gain" It is something like that. It is a very profound quote that has had an impact on many a folk who have been called to the mission field and other ministries. Now it is displayed on a hat like a cheap bumper sticker on a car.
What I want to know is where is the MONEY GOING?
Is a percentage going to be sent to the tribe or what?
Making a quality movie about Martyrs for the cause of Christ is one thing but selling T shirts and necklaces and all that bologna just isn't right to me. Why don't they just come out with some action figures for kids like one of the dudes that speared the men they could have an action figure of one of them holding a spear of something.
Christian marketing has really gotten out of hand. It is pathetic.

I absolutely agree with you!!!

Having said that, I watched the documentary on this tribe that Stephen Curtis Chapman showed at his concerts and I am looking forward to the movie.

The quote was found it Jim Elliot's journal after he was martyred. It read, "he is no fool who looses what he can never keep, to gain what he can never loose." He is speaking of his life of course, and we all say the same, do we not. Didn't Jesus say only those who loose their lives will gain them?

Shannont, The movie is produced by Bearing Fruit Communications Of Oklahoma City OK. BFC is a division of Hobby Lobby owned by a person by the name of Green. His son heads up BFC. The promotion of this particular movie is being promoted by an ex FCA Fundraiser. I have not read where or how the proceeds will be used.

I will be boycotting this movie. I do not knowingly support the gay community and Chad Allen, who plays Nate Saint, is a gay activist.

This is a tragedy for the Christian community and church groups which are planning to support this film by going to see the previews. I am going to try to write Steve Saint & see why he picked a gay activist to play his slain father, Nate Saint. [IMG]

http://www.chadallenonline.com/news/index.html

A quick Google search shows that this is the same Chad Allen and he is regarded highly in the gay community ever since he "came out" of the closet. [IMG]

I guess the bottom line is the almighty dollar.

I think it is okay that a gay man is portraying Nate Saint (not saying I would have chosen it this way). No one who knows this will think Nate Saint is gay. Acting is acting and can be done by anyone who has that skill.

In fact, maybe some gay people will see this movie because of this actor. That would be a good thing!

But those who are bothered, I respect their decision not to go.

I saw the Chapman documentary awhile back and we're planning on going to see the movie this weekend.

LE, Steve Saint is scheduled to speak this fall at my church; perhaps I'll get an opportunity to ask him why that particular actor was chosen to play his father.

==I cannot agree with that. Chad Allen is not just "a gay man" he is a homosexual activist who has performed in plays where Jesus was portrayed as being homosexual. He also views this movie as a chance to bring Christians and gays together. In my opinion any Christian who gives their hard earned money to see this movie is either confused, compromised, or blind.

We cannot be pragmatic about this. This man promotes sin.

==You have got to be kidding me, right? That is not a good thing! Since when did over-looking sin, gross sin in fact, become a witnessing tool? Since when did teaming up with a militant homosexual activist become a witnessing tool? The homosexual community is laughing at this "Christian" movie. I assure you this is not a witnessing tool.

I did not know anything about chad allen untill the talk started here. I'm not happy with the casting choice, but I have been a fan of Every Tribe Entertainment for some time. I may still see the movie inspite of Mr Allen, but I will be letting every tribe know I expect better from them. Let them know we all want Christian films, but we are not happy with the casting of mr allen and his activism.

</font>
You realize you are calling all believers who see this movie "confused, compromised, or blind." How does a movie about martyred missionaries promote sin?

Do you check out every actor in every movie or tv show you watch? Where do you draw the line? Do you watch movies played by actors who are atheists, agnostics, lukewarm believers, Pagans, New Agers (there's a long list of those), liberal Christians, Scientologists like Tom Cruise, Kirstie Alley, and others (and many of them are activist in their 'faith'), etc.? I'm truly wondering. Scientology is probably one of the most evil cults in existence.

I say this because you are calling fellow believers who disagree with you names.

Martin. [IMG] </font>
How does going to this movie overlook sin?

If the movie was about a homosexual and promoted homosexual behavior, that would be a different story.

I am beginning to question the Every Tribe Entertainment's values.

Besides choosing a homosexual activist who they saw on the cover of a Gay Magazine for the part of Nate Saint in 'End of the Spear',

They also produced a forerunner of the movie, 'Beyond the Gates of Splendor, a PG-13 movie that is full of violence and nudity. Women of the Waorani tribe are seen in the movie topless.

And 13 year olds can watch this?

I wonder if their movie, 'Chandra's Mirror' will have the same?

Uhhh, women of the Waorani tribe ARE topless. Depicting them accurately in this manner shouldn't be a problem, unless I'm to remove all the copies of National Geographic from my home. If the depiction of nudity is sexual in nature, then I'd be concerned. But in this manner, it should not be inoffensive.
I would let my children watch 'Beyond the Gates of Splendor'. And unless the movie 'End of the Spear contains graphic/gratuitous sexuality or violence, I'll be taking them to see that as well.
The movie isn't primarily about Christ or God. The movie is primarily about missionaries, so I don't think this is a valid critique.

9 and 15 (the 18yo is now in a position of being able to watch whatever she chooses).
But the violence and nudity are not at all gratuitous in nature.

Ya know, Adam and Eve hid themselves when they heard God in the garden, because they were naked.

God clothed them for a reason. God does not want man, nor woman to parade around naked for anyone to see.

And for a man to say a christiian movie can have nudity in it because a worldly magazine has nudity, shows the moral values, or maybe I should say immoral values, of that man.
