Why is it Christianity needed to be "reformed" when we are to be conformed to His express image?

Calvinism began when man thought he could determine the intent and scope of the Gospel by human reasoning.

    From my "vile mouth".

We are to be conformed to His (Christ's)image.

Are you aware of Church History? After so many for so long lived in the darkness of the Middle Ages -- the Reformation broke through with the light of the Word of God.The true Church was in dire need of Reformation as much in the days of Josiah and Hezekiah.

If you are referencing John Calvin --- you are so wrong. The whole point of this thread is that John Calvin is not the source of Calvinism -- the Scripture is.

    Election goes both ways.

Deut 30:19-20, "I call heaven and earth to witness against you today, that I have set before you life and death, the blessing and the curse. So choose life in order that you may live, you and your descendants, by loving the Lord your God, by obeying His voice, and by holding fast to Him; for this is your life and the length of your days, that you may live in the land which the Lord swore to your fathers, to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, to give them."

God did not just choose people. He also chose Israel and angels.

1 Tim 5:21, "I solemnly charge you in the presence of God and of Christ Jesus and of His chosen angels, to maintain these principles without bias, doing nothing in a spirit of partiality."

The hidden wisdom of God is predestined.

1 Cor. 2:6, 7, "Yet we do speak wisdom among those who are mature; a wisdom, however, not of this age nor of the rulers of this age, who are passing away; but we speak God's wisdom in a mystery, the hidden wisdom which God predestined before the ages to our glory;"

    Compare

Romans 8:29, 30, "For those whom He foreknew, He also predestined to become conformed to the image of His Son, so that He would be the firstborn among many brethren; and these whom He predestined, He also called; and these whom He called, He also justified; and these whom He justified, He also glorified.

    and

Mt. 22:14 "For many are called, but few are chosen."

Seems to me that God's predetermined plan is to call people to Himself. God's predetermined plan is for those He calls to respond. Those who respond are those he chooses. If he has already chose some to heaven and others to hell then why have a call and an opportunity for response at all?

IN Paul's day it was the gospel.
Today there are so many false gospels and weakened gospels, that terms like Calvinism and arminianism are needed to distinguish what people believe the Gospel really is.
    In other words:

    Calvinism= Gospel
    Arminianism= Gospel weakened
    Pelagianism etc= False gospel

Are you saying that calvinism did not preceed the gospel of Jesus Christ?

    Dale-c,

I use to say that Calvinism is another way of referring to the Gospel.

    I was so wrong.

Calvinism is a set of beliefs about salvation from start to finish.

The Gospel is primarily about a Person and how he died for our sins and was raised on the third day, making good on his death by conquering death and giving a new hope (1 Cor 15:1ff).

Calvinism is NOT the gospel. Let's quit saying that one.

TCG, we may not see eye to eye on some things but I agree with your above post - absolutely.

I don't believe any system of beliefs should be exaulted to such a place nor is/were they ever intended to be so.

There has always been a remnant of God's people. There are some awful things in the OT. There are also those who walked with God too.

Man has always sought selfishness until God breaks them.

"Some of them, in the course of two or three generations, or even less, became either Arian or Socinian. This was eventually the case with nearly all the Presbyterians" ---Spurgeon, writing about the Calvinists ejected from the Church of England by the Act of Uniformity of 1662.

Duh, John Calvin, last revision of The Institutes of The Christian Religion: 1559.

But that was shot down by the following:

Well then what do we need Calvin for if it was already there?
Just throw away your Intsitutes and read the Scripture.

    Here is one example

If a better term is wanting then my advice would be to say nothing.

The Word of God is God-breathed not calvinistic.

This is the most refreshing, honest posts I have read by a calvinist. It is not proud, arrogant and self righteous....and spot one

Calvinsim (like the non cal systems) is merely a systematic theology, nothing more, nothing less.

Just look at where the Presbyterians once were and where they are now.
