I think the long hair and covering of the head is symbolic with a deeper meaning than just on the surface pertaining to actual literal hair length. I can’t believe you guys are talking about hair cuts!

And I can't believe there are those out they who try to claim that God has one standard for men's hair for all time and all places but no one knows what it is  .

What Linda was saying is the length does not necessarily matter unless one is trying to look like the opposite gender than what God intended.

We both know there is no real set length for long-short hair prescribed in God's Word.

The long hair Paul was speaking of may have been more 'style' than length. We look at women's hair today... the bob, you can tell it is a woman's haircut, but it is short.

The butch, otoh, is very much like a man's crew-cut.

A very reasonable post - thank you. With the men I mentioned their hair was very long, but it looked like a man's hair, no one would mistake them for women. Do you think they would be permitted in most IFB pulpits today?

I agree with you. It is a shame, not an abomination. </font>
1. Be imitators of me, just as I also am of Christ.
2. Now I praise you because you remember me in everything and hold firmly to the traditions, just as I delivered them to you.
3. But I want you to understand that Christ is the head of every man, and the man is the head of a woman, and God is the head of Christ.
4. Every man who has something on his head while praying or prophesying disgraces his head.
5. But every woman who has her head uncovered while praying or prophesying disgraces her head, for she is one and the same as the woman whose head is shaved.
6. For if a woman does not cover her head, let her also have her hair cut off; but if it is disgraceful for a woman to have her hair cut off or her head shaved, let her cover her head.
7. For a man ought not to have his head covered, since he is the image and glory of God; but the woman is the glory of man.
8. For man does not originate from woman, but woman from man;
9. for indeed man was not created for the woman's sake, but woman for the man's sake.
10. Therefore the woman ought to have a symbol of authority on her head, because of the angels.
11. However, in the Lord, neither is woman independent of man, nor is man independent of woman.
12. For as the woman originates from the man, so also the man has his birth through the woman; and all things originate from God.
13. Judge for yourselves: is it proper for a woman to pray to God with her head uncovered?
14. Does not even nature itself teach you that if a man has long hair, it is a dishonor to him,
15. but if a woman has long hair, it is a glory to her? For her hair is given to her for a covering.
16. But if one is inclined to be contentious, we have no other practice, nor have the churches of God. (NASB, 1995)

Paul wrote here that nature itself teaches that if a man has long hair, it dishonors him. That is only part of his argument that wearing long hair is a sin against God, and obviously so. If any sin is so obviously wrong that even nature itself teaches us that it is wrong, it must be really, really wrong, a terrible abomination in the sight of God. And most certainly for any Christian to willfully and deliberately defy God and sin against Him in any manner whatsoever is an abomination.

In the KJV we find the word abomination used 76 times in 69 verses. Read these verses and tell me how many of the named abominable things are any more of an abomination than for a Christian to willfully and deliberately defy God and sin against Him by wearing his hair so long as to cause gender confusion.

Probably not. Many this day and age frown on a man having hair below the ears or down to the shoulder.

Too many look at the outward appearances and forget the character is what comes from within.

If I, as a man, am supposed to have short hair, and as I am not bald, (yet anyway) decide to shave it and have no hair would that not be a shame to me, as well. The Scripture that keeps being tossed around implies short hair, not no hair. The OT said that there was no disgrace to being bald, and implied it was "just something that happened". Unless like some, one of the gentleman talked about, who I presume he is donating his hair for, who have lost it due to illness and treatment, such as chemo, virtually no one goes completely bald. I agree that Jesus didn't, in all probability have a GI boot camp haircut. I also would supose his was shorter than the typical woman of his culture. The appeal to "well, we know that..." is my opinion is, at best, opinion. How do we even know that Jesus might not have been bald on top? [IMG]

</font>
Craig,

Two questions:

1. Isn't there something in the Old Testament about certain nazerene men who are set apart by God who take an oath not to shave their heads? I think I heard about that once. Would you please enlighten me on this? If this is a command by God to the Nazerene men, is there something that changed in between the Old and New Testaments that changed this command? Did God change his mind (I guess that question could be kind of loaded and applied to several situations.)? Is it also possible that God commanded one thing for one culture and another for another culture?

2. Does the Bible give us any instructions on what length of hair is too long for a man to wear? If you are going to respond by saying that if the man's hair looks like a woman's hair, I would only have to respond by stating the obvious cultural diversity in how women have worn their hair throughout history and even today.

Wow, this may be the best post I have ever seen from you SFIC. I agree. </font>
[IMG] [IMG] </font>
If you are saved and you know it, your hair will surely show it.

Some years ago I received a box of books from London that was shipped to me on a freighter. The box was much smaller than it should be, and it had been repaired with tape. Just by looking at the box I could be absolutely certain that all was not well inside the box. When I opened it, I saw that the merchant in London had accidentally sent me the wrong books—and the books that he sent had been damaged in shipment. The same thing is true of a Christian—if his hair is long, one can be absolutely certain that all is not well inside the box—the man’s character is seriously flawed. Men of impeccable character, Christian or not, do not willfully sin. Christians who love God and His word do not compromise and their commitment to Christ shows brightly for all to see.

My dog Spot is a dog of outstanding Christian character and principles, and has a vast knowledge of the Bible, so I ran this thread past him to learn of his opinion and he told me to find a good bone to chew on and chill out, so that is what I am going to do. :D

Thank you for your fellowship in this thread.

Long hair is not a sin, it is a shame. To say it is a sin or an abomination is adding to the Word of God

SFIC,

I am not even sure it is a shame for all men.

ahhh, but Paul did not say it was a shame for certain men, but just that for a man to wear long hair it is a shame.

We could nitpick and say Paul said 'a man' meaning only one man, if you wish.

Wonder which man that was?

No, probably only to Christians, and specifically to whom Paul was writing, where this somehow had become an obvious problem! He (and the Holy Spirit) did not find it necessary, for example, to address the church at Ephesus over this.
