what should women do if the men won't.

    Let's start with:

What should the men be doing? What positions should they hold in the church, what positions shouldn't they hold?

Within that, how should they be behaving? Is it sin for a man to "lord it over" other's in the church simply because he holds a certain position?

To whom should a man be accountable?

    Let's keep it scriptural!

Nobody who is an office holder in the church should lord it over anybody. If you are an officer or Sunday School teacher, the preacher or whatever, you are a servant not a master.

Not good enough guys and Plain Old Bill's post only answers part of the question. How about backing it up with some scripture?

(shakes head in amazement at how scripture comes out of the woodwork when the question is something a woman shouldn't be doing, but can't get any references about what a man SHOULD be doing. Do we really have this negative a view about scripture that it only tells what we shouldn't do and not what we should?)

I've honestly never heard of all the men in the church refusing to do a man-only job, so that a woman was forced to do it.

    Has anyone else?
If anyone has any experiences with this, I'd love to hear them and how the situation came about.

Director of Education -- I was elected by the Education Council when I got up and left to go to the bathroom. Most of the council were men. They didn't want the job. I loved the challenge but I did learn NEVER to get up to go to the bathroom during a council meeting again!

Helen! I've heard stories like that before, but I've never known anyone that it really happened to. My goodness girl - what a lesson learned.

This hasn't been an issue anywhere we've been either.

I thought i would see scripture verses buy now, so here goes.

    God calls man to lead: 1Timothy 1:15, 3:1, 4:9, 2 Tomthy 2:11, and Titus 3:8

    God seeks a man after his own heart: 1 Samuel 13:14, Ezek. 22:30, Jer. 45:5, 1 Cor.9:16

God calls shepherds to care for his sheep and equip them: Acts 20:28, 1 Peter5:2. 2 Timothy 4:5, Eph. 4:12

God calls HOLY men, above reproach: Timothy 3:2:

I encourage readers to look these up that is why i didn't write the verses out.

QUOTE...."To whom should a man be accountable?"

Ultimately to God but also to the congregation, I am not big on independant pastors having the final say without regards to his elders and congregation. Too much power corrupts

Well wait, before we can answer the the second question of what should a woman do, we have to answer the first what should the men be doing, and what attitude should they have while doing it?

And honestly, some of ya'll haven't lived out in "God's Country" like I have. I've been part of a dying church that didn't have enough men to fill the so-called men only roles. Not that the men weren't members, just that they wouldn't participate. There was a male preacher and the deacons were male, but from there on down you took what you could get. And when the deacons died off, they simply did without in spite of it being part of the church bylaws that there be seven.

    So what should be done?

    Wow mk!

So the men are there and they just won't do the jobs that they should be doing?

Well, I've always lived in large areas -- Winston Salem is the smallest place I've ever lived. We've always gone to large churches and we've always had men (and women) for major roles. Sunday School/Bible Fellowship is hard at times.

    So what should be done...
I want to be diplomatic here because no one can see my face or my eyes or hear my voice. I want to be kind and loving here. I'd pray. I'd be mad. My poor husband would have so many earfuls he'd have cauliflower ears (he's had them before). I think I might just have to prophesy. I'd do as much as I could without being a nag to get the men to pick up their roles. If they didn't and there was somewhere for me to go, I'd change churches. But I've always lived in places where there was somewhere else to go.

The reason I'd leave is because I have a tendency to be bossy and take over. I'd run the church if they'd let me (not really, I know my place). But I'm still afraid I might if I was in a church like you describe. AND that's just not the way it should be.

I know I was completely unhelpful, but I hope I made sense anyway. My super-duper cough syrup is starting to kick in.

I wasn't aware that the Bible said that women couldn't fill those roles. It only takes one man to be pastor.
What are the other male roles?

I'm not being smart alec, really. I'm truly not aware that there were other roles that were men only. I've heard that some churches believe deacons should be men only, but how many deacons does a tiny church need?
Ah, Sunday School teacher for men. Forgot about that. I've been in a church where the pastor did the SS and the Church service, don't see an issue with having everyone in those. I loved that about one church we had...it was a family affair. [IMG] If a baby cried, we stopped and took care of the baby! And there's nothing wrong with a preacher holding his grandbaby and preaching if that's what it takes, or mamma walking him around to keep him quiet. :D

You know Gina, you are so very right. It's just so sad to think about a church where the women do virtually everything but pastor.

It's better now, but yes, at the time there were men who were members, but wouldn't work and in some cases no longer even attended (my own husband was/is one). Now we no longer attend there, but my inlaws do. They just this past year ordained enough men to fill the seven slots.

I've tried it all, MC. And I did change churches after deciding my kids needed to hear someone besides me teach them about the things of God. (yes, I did it with my husbands blessing for those who want to know.)

I didn't tell you about another church that was nearby that had a preacher maybe one Sunday out of the month and the rest of the time the members(men and women alike) took turns with the teaching (wasn't pulpit preaching like we think of it). That church barely had regular members though.

Frenchy, still going through your verses. I'll be back. :D You might want to take a look at the thread that sparked my questions:

    http://www.baptistboard.com/ubb/ultimatebb.php/topic/10/6211.html

Gina, you made have to come back and edit! ;)

Let's see, things I've been told only a man should do: deacon, male or mixed class SS teacher, financial director, SS teacher for older boys, youth director and there is a host of thing where it is preferable to have a man such as music director.

There in lies my question. What does the Bible mandate that a man and man alone do? Are there exceptions?

I hadn't even thought about financial director as having to be a man, but now that you mention it, I can see where it would fit. I can't think of anymore that are biblically mandated. I think a case could be made for youth director not having to be either -- directing doesn't necessitate teaching -- just depends on how the ministry is set up I'd think. And honestly on any teaching -- suppose a woman set things up like a facilitator (orchestrating) instead of teaching? Could a woman step into some "teaching" situations with some tweaks to how the "teaching" was done?

Well I don't know MC. But what comes to mind is the "authority" that comes with a position. Just how far does the mandate that a "woman not usurp the authority of a man" go?

And where by the way are the men? There were plenty of them down on the Women Preacher thread, but only one has checked in here. (Frenchy, you are a man, right?) I might've even scared him off.

I think alot of this stems from a faulty view of scripture. We read it as if it were written to US as original recipients. Of course, its FOR us, but we have to ask what did it mean then before we can know what it can mean now. I teach boys and lead men in choir  and God is blessing my ministry in many ways.

I can only think of one instance when a woman had to take a role that is reserved for men, and that one was on a remote mission field. The lady (many years ago, now) went to a part of Africa that the men missionaries absolutely refused to go. She was a single missionary lady, and she asked for men to go and start a church and she'd minister to the ladies. They would not go. So she went alone. She taught as she could, and I believe she trained one of the national tribal men to take over the small group of believers. ("White Queen of the Cannibals" is the name of the book).

Tater, you are in good company too. Mrs. Cedarholm, wife of Dr. Cedarholm who started Maranatha BB College, led one of their choirs for awhile - it included young men.

    Why is that sad?
Would it be equally sad to see a church where men do everything but work in the nursery?

All confuseled here...maybe if I was in bed where I aught to be I wouldn't be. [IMG]
