What's a Baptist to do?

- Margarine was originally manufactured to fatten turkeys. When it killed the turkeys, the people who had put all the money into the research wanted a payback so they put their heads together to figure out what to do with this product to get their money back. It was a white substance with no food appeal so they added the yellow coloring and sold it to people to use in place of butter. How do you like it? They have come out with some clever new flavorings.

DO YOU KNOW...the difference between margarine and butter?

Read on to the end...gets very interesting!

Both have the same amount of calories.

Butter is slightly higher in saturated fats at 8 grams compared to 5 grams.

Eating margarine can increase heart disease in women by 53% over eating the same amount of butter, according to a recent Harvard Medical Study.

Eating butter increases the absorption of many other nutrients in other foods.

Butter has many nutritional benefits where margarine has a few only because they are added!

Butter tastes much better than margarine and it can enhance the flavors of other foods.

Butter has been around for centuries where margarine has been around for less than 100 years.

And now, for Margarine..

Very high in trans fatty acids.

Triple risk of coronary heart disease.

Increases total cholesterol and LDL (this is the bad cholesterol) and lowers HDL cholesterol, (the good cholesterol)

Increases the risk of cancers up to five fold.

Lowers quality of breast milk.

Decreases immune response.

Decreases insulin response.

And here's the most disturbing fact.... HERE IS THE PART THAT IS VERY INTERESTING!

Margarine is but ONE MOLECULE away from being PLASTIC..

This fact alone was enough to have me avoiding margarine for life and anything else that is hydrogenated (this means hydrogen is added, changing the molecular structure of the substance).

You can try this yourself:

Purchase a tub of margarine and leave it in your garage or shaded area.

Within a couple of days you will note a couple of things:
* no flies, not even those pesky fruit flies will go near it (that should tell you something)

* it does not rot or smell differently because it has no nutritional value; nothing will grow on it Even those teeny weeny microorganisms will not a find a home to grow. Why? Because it is nearly plastic. Would you melt your Tupperware and spread that on your toast?

Does this have much to do with Baptists?

Yes, margarine is bad for you and everyone should avoid it. However, it is not "almost plastic." It's partially hydrogenated oils. If margarine is "almost plastic," butter should be completely plastic because most of the lipids are fully hydrogenated.

Let's also note that hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) is almost water (H2O), so we should all start drinking it. :D

maragrine is cheaper, $0.99 compared to an equal amount of butter would be over $5, I only buy cholesterol free, whereas you don't get cholesterol free butter. I've been eating it all my life and I'm not dead yet.

I like the way butter tastes better. I hardly ever eat it, so when I do, I want the real thing.

Being on a gluten free diet -- there is very little to butter in my life ;)

In this house it's either olive oil or butter. Real stuff for real food. I have a little canola for other baking, but it is not often used.

It's a catch-22. Butter has cholesterol and raises your LDL (bad cholesterol). Margarine doesn't have cholesterol, but it raises your LDL even more and also lowers your HDL (good cholesterol). I guess you must be concerned about your cholesterol levels, but I don't think margarine's the way to go for that. Have you had your cholesterol checked recently?

I'm allergic to butter (which was why I was using margarine) so have switched to oils (walnut oil and olive oil particularly). It's more expensive but I don't use a lot so it doesn't make a noticeable difference. Except in my cholesterol--down >50 points and my HDL is up to 50.

Having grown up on a dairy farm it would be a mortal sin for me to use anything but butter! We hope to get a sweet little jersey cow this summer and make our own butter. Nothing better! We had an old cow a few years ago and did that. It paid off as our family goes through a gallon of milk a day and the butter we made from the cream was a bonus. Our cow got too old and went to cow heaven one night and is now buried in the back pasture.

I am trying to lose weight, but I occasionally eat butter, (a small amount) for cooking I use canola oil or olive oil. Margarine is worse than butter in so many ways.
Someone told me that if you mix a tablespoon of butter with a tablespoon of olive or canola oil, you will still have butter flavor with less saturated fat.
Just don't forget, fat is still fat. ;)

Neither Margaine or Butter are healthy choices. I suggest either should be used in such moderation that the differences between them become somewhat negligable. Otherwise use butter by all means.

I think you've got some flawed (if not fabricated) history there, Ben. Margarine was first created by a French chemist at the behest of Napoleon III to provide a low-cost alternative to butter.

For many years, it was illegal in the U.S. to sell yellow margarine; the dairy lobby successfully upheld that law for quite a while because it didn't want the competition. (The ban, I've read, was maintained in Australia until the 1960s.)

Take all things in moderation and some things need to be taken in very small portions. It seems that some people seem to just have to have a lot of things that really shouldn't be in large amounts. They think the solution has to be to find a more "innocuous" substitute for the real thing so that they can take it in large amounts. The best thing to do is to research what is healthy and read the Nutrition Facts on everything that you buy from the store and "budget" your daily intake. I was once overweight and I have done this and lost about 40 pounds. I no longer think of myself as overweight.
Part of eating healthy is eating natural, and in moderation. Part of losing weight is eating healthy, reading labels for everything, and weighing yourself constantly (like every day or a few times per week) to monitor your progress and keep yourself accountable, and knowing that nothing happens overnight. Hey, I was quite heavy for virtually my entire life for all of my minor years, if I can lose weight anyone can.

Back on topic, whether margarine or butter, it should be in small amounts.

I miss real cows milk! My grandmother used to have it... she made butter, cheese, ice cream... and I loved the taste of the real thing..

I also remember milking those cows....

I truly believe that it was the milk, and her cooking.... along with me devouring it, that made me FAT!

But it tasted soooooooo good...

I would choose butter over margarine, but the price difference comes into play in my house.
