The Hell-a-vision

Ron and I hardly ever watch TV--I think it's mostly a waste of time. As bad as the TV is, there is NO need to smash one in front of your congregation in church--I believe it sends the WRONG message to young children. (I heard one cry when he smashed the TV). It's not the TV itself that's bad, --- it's simply an electronic box/CRT--- it's our attitude towards it. We can choose not to turn it on. The TV should NOT be a babysitter either. Sanderson had some good points, but his choice of words could have been more tactful. Computers, radios, dvd/vcr players, etc---you name it---can be just as bad. (GIGO)--why not smash those things too?????

I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service. And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God. (Romans 12:1-2)

Outward violence sends the wrong message--the scriptures say "be not conformed to this world, but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind". When Jesus overturned the moneychangers in the temple, they were ALREADY in the act of extortion. Nobody was watching a TV in that church. Violence is not the answer. Train your children in the admonition and nurture of the Lord in order that they will NOT desire worldly pleasures, like TV.

 

I did, it was most aggravating. I don't think the parents had any right to deceive their children like that.

 

Shilo, I can't believe that in order to raise good kids you have to not allow them to watch tv or movies,secualr music, contempary christian music, girls have to be in dresses all the time they have to be homeschooled etc. etc.

There are a lot of great kids out there christian and non christian who were able to watch TV, listen to certain kinds of music, go to the movies wear pants, go to public or private schools be apart of sports functions etc. etc. (nothing wrong with girls wearing pants by the way)

God is the one who is in ultimate control of how our kids turn out don't fool yourself into thinking we are the sole reason our kids turn out so good. if that were true people like me and my husband who were not raised in christian homes and for those not even raised in good homes at all, we all turned out pretty good. we don't drink, smoke, do drugs or have affairs. and i would have to say i know a lot of non christians who act better and have kinder hearts than christains, who have also raised good kids.

It does help to raise our kids in the love and amanition of the Lord, and all the commands he commmands not the man made ones. there is no quarentee at all that by doing this or that will produce good children. we just have to do our best and pray that God's will will be done. in fact studies have shown that it is ones persoanlity that determines the choices they will make. why do you think you can have 3 kids rasied in the same home all turn out differently? that is what happened in our home 3 kids raised the same, yet all different outcomes based on personality and genitics.

My kids have turned out fine so far and they were able to watch tv and go to the movies, so there goes your theory.

Blah, blah, blah. The guy obviously built a "sermon" around his desire to smash a television set in front of a few people, who, it seems by the silence of them all (except for the little kid crying for fear) were not impressed in the way the preacher may have wanted.

That means I'd miss golf, and the Masters is on this weekend. Nope. The TV stays.

 

Television is like this internet you all are using. It has good and bad. The internet has plenty of bad. What is in the heart will come out regardless of what you are doing.

At the top of the disguisting list in TV are soap operas and reality shows.

 

Don't forget CCM and Burger King commercials!

 

My grandson and I watch reruns of Little House on the Prairie and have to turn the TV off during the commercials.

 

Sue, the girls got to see the very last episode of it last night. They'd never seen it before.

My favorite one was the sea monster one though. "Run children, run for your lives!" That was hilarious! Or should I say...hellarious since it was on tv?

 

people read posts like they read their bible OUT OF CONTEXT. I said it was one of the reasons you can have the same kids raised in the same home and they can all turn out different.

Take this for food for thought. Adam and Eve were raised in a PEFECT Enviorment and they both SINNED, One of their sons was a MURDER, so whats their excuse can't blame it on TV, alcohol, music, dress (they were just about naked) drugs etc.

 

ME! We have not watched any TV in several months.

Gina: I watched all of the Little House on the Prairie shows when my kids were growing up, now I get to watch them (in syndication) again with Brent. We watch at least two episodes a day on the Hallmark Channel. I never get tired of them.

Do you remember "Five Mile Creek"? That was only on TV for 20 episodes in the 80's. I have the first 13, on DVD's, so far. We watch 2 episodes every Sunday afternoon. I'm hoping to find the other 7 episodes on eBay also...

BTW, my Pastor is about as IFB as they come and he has a weekly sermon on our local TV channel.

OK Blessed i stand corrected. i should have said it is one of the MAIN reasons. i still think ones personality or temperament has the greatest influence on the "choices" one makes in adulthood. otherwise how would you explain, all being raised in the same home yet turning out different? I'm sure you have your own family examples. of course enviorment "upbringing" , and God's sovereignty all have a huge role. Plus again how do you explain my statement

The pastor sounded very similar to a church we visited once when we arrived here from Hawaii. After looking through his website, there was indeed a Hyles connection. The church that was similar here literally scared us to the point my teenage son was sitting at attention. Not my type of church, but isn't it amazing how different many IFB churches are?
