Chavez to arm reserves against eventual attack by US

Caracas.– Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez announced Saturday the immediate creation of a military reserve of a million well-armed, well-equipped troops, in case of an invasion by the United States.

"We are going to speed up the organization of our military reserves and of the territorial guard. We need more rifles than the 100,000 we bought from Russia. We need a million well-armed, well-equipped men," Chavez said at the end of a massive march in support of his government and against the United States.

If I remember right, Iraq had an army of around 1 million well armed soldiers. Chavez might want to try for 2 million. Well equipped men + buying rifles from Russia = oxymoron

He'll be waiting a long time for the invasion.

A real wise use of scarce funds, too.

"well-armed, well-equipped troops" - in Venezuela? Chavez seems to be like most dictators; he needs a "boogy-man" enemy/country to confuse his subjects (as Hitler did using the Jews) and divert their attention from his excesses and inability to move them out of poverty.

He's got drug money backing him; but I think the future of warfare is going to be fought primarily in finances using the Internet, conducted not on battlefields, but in cyberspace. Topple a country's money and they'll destroy themselves from within.

We may not like all the spying that's going on, but let's face it, as technology increases, someone is going to do it to us unless we're one step ahead of them. I've been a victim of identity theft three times now and to me, those people are terrorists, and need to be dealt with harshly.

Those million troops will no doubt find other things to do while waiting for the invasion.

Not a good time to be a Venezuelan.

I feel for the people of Venezuela. Our church helped build a church in Guigue, over the past 2 years, and the people we met were very loving and hungry for the Gospel.

Chavez is out of his mind. If he wants to build a million man army, he can go right ahead. The US isn't going to invade, and if the US did, it would still defeat him.

I wasn't agreeing that the US would invade, I don't believe that will happen. I was just referring to the control he wants over the people of Venezuela.

Chavez may have other uses planned for that army. Confronting the US might just be an excuse.

On the other hand, there is widespread skepticism about Bush's judgement and stability.

He might be thinking Bush would really be dumb enough to declare war on Venezuela.

I suppose they are all doing the goose step. Has anyone besides me ever noticed how these dictators have their troops do the goose step as they march and always have to show off their missles in big parades? Goofy.

He's never been the sharpest tack in the box except for possibly self promotion.

    North Korea is Dark

South Korea is bright, North Korea is dark. This amazing image is included in the standard US Department of Defense briefings on North Korea. It was mentioned in a news briefing on 23 December 2002 by Defense Secretary Rumsfeld, who stated that "If you look at a picture from the sky of the Korean Peninsula at night, South Korea is filled with lights and energy and vitality and a booming economy; North Korea is dark." There are a number of versions of this image in circulation, with visible differences that vary according to the conditions at the time the imagery was acquired.
