I am in the process of teaching my children to pray and to use a prayer journal. In doing so I found myself wondering what would be the most effective way to pray for our pastor, missionaries etc...

I want them to be praying more than "God bless the missionaries and our pastor" and so on. As I have thought on this I realize that families in full time Christian service probably face problems and situations that I cannot relate to or even consider.

I guess what I am asking is what might be some special prayer needs of pastors, missionaries, evangelists etc... and their families that I as an oridnary person may not be aware of. I guess I am thinking of things like maybe loneliness, always being under everyone's scrutiny. What is the hardest thing about being a PK or an MK ? Things like that.

I think just the sheer responsibility would be the most overlooked aspect.

I think what you may be looking for to teach your children is having a true burden, and want for God to step in and help them. I tend to lose sight of the fact that these are real people we need to be praying for, not just another name on a list to mention to God. Beyond the help of the Holy Spirit of God leading their steps, and the strength for them to be all that God wants then to be... God knows the specifics.

    I hope that helps.

I think specifics are good. Ask your Pastor for specific needs. You can read most monthly Missionary Prayer Letters for a list of individual prayer requests. In reagrds to teaching children to pray I would pick specific things and so that the kids see the Lord's answer to those specific requests.

Regarding, being a PK/MK (I was a PK) I would pray for their spirit (spiritual attitude) while this may seem contrary to being specific as I mentioned above this is what is needed the most in a Pastor's home. Because it is easy and expected to 'put on the front' "because Dad's the Pastor" just as any (and every) home suffers through worries, discouragements, arguments, etc. the attitudes are the neediest prayer requests for their home.

One thing I thought of is about missionaries on the field.....they are under alot of pressure from many different areas. Their home and supporting churches (often many different pastors, and we know how many different opinions there are among like-minded people), sometimes they are laboring under hostile governments, and there are often very few other American Christians around. Sometimes we don't think of this last point, but it really does have an impact on their emotions and such. No one else really understands.....essentially.

One great way to have your kids really pray for missionaries is have them start being a penpal to some MKs. They then help those families in more than one way, they provide friendship for the kids, AND they learn how to really pray for them effectively.
