    Is Good Friday a hoax?

    I think so.

Mat 12:40 For as Jonas was three days and three nights in the whale's belly; so shall the Son of man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.

Anyone who believes this verse must realize that if Jesus was crucified on Friday, he could not have been in the heart of the earth for 3 days and 3 nights. If he died on Friday, that would make 1 day and 2 nights. Is that how long Jonah was in the whale's belly?

Do most Baptists agree that Jesus died on Wednesday night? It seems that I have come across many who believe the Catholic tradition that he was crucified on Friday.

My sermon this Sunday morning gave several reasons why Jesus was not crucified on Friday in addition to Matt 12:40. The title was "The Hoax of Good Friday" taken from a sermon I heard of the same name with some other information/preaching on the subject. Here is the link:

    Ephesians 4:25

"Therefore, laying aside falsehood, speak truth each one of you with his neighbor, for we are members of one another. 26, Be angry, and yet do not sin; do not let the sun go down on your anger, 27, and do not give the devil an opportunity. 29, Let no unwholesome word proceed from your mouth, but only such a word as is good for edification according to the need of the moment, so that it will give grace to those who hear. 30, Do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. 31, Let all bitterness and wrath and anger and clamor and slander be put away from you, along with all malice. 32, Be kind to one another, tender-hearted, forgiving each other, just as God in Christ also has forgiven you."

    What difference does it make?
All that matters is that Christ died, and that He died for me.

    Debby in Philly,
Amen to that, best comment I have heard in a while. Its beyond my comprehension that a pastor would spend an entire sermon on a trivial subject such as that. That does not have one thing to do with either salvation, the Gospel, or making people more like Jesus. Some people need hobbies bad.

I think He was probably crucified on Thursday but as you both have said... all that truly matters is that He died for our sins.

The only marginal thing it could have any bearing on is whether Christ actually died or not. One might argue that either a shorter or longer time in the tomb might better facilitate a "swoon" or fake death.

Hey you know what... I wonder if I'll visit this church when I drive out to Phoenix this summer? Probably not.

Pastor Anderson... what does it matter? I tend to agree with Debby. He died and rose again. I wasn't there, so I can't say when He died... although I do believe that He died and didn't swoon... that theory always strikes me as being really dumb.

Seems to me you should be telling the story and sharing why they should be saved... not trying to confuse and divide. Just my opinion.

I was going to watch the special "Was Good Friday a Hoax?" on my Satan spawned TV set but Mr. Sanderson came to my house and sledgehammered my TV while my wife was at her male OB/GYN appointment. I would have stopped him, but I was in the shower, so I was sinfully naked at the time.

    Sheesh.

Hey, Mister Sanderson, are you still scaring little children in your sermons?

It is important to remember that the Friday in the crucifiction week was a sabbath as well as the weekly Sabbath, hence I go with Good Thursday rather than Good Friday.

No matter what day of the week it was, why do you call it "good?" "There is none good but one; that is, God" somebody said.

And the guy who began this thread... in my estimation his sermons have the value of teats on a boar hog; comparable to this particular topic.

If Good Friday is a "hoax," the hoaxers sure have suckered a lot of calendar publishers into marking it.

I celebrate Good Friday because it's a paid holiday. However, it has nothing to do with the death, burial, and resurrection of our Lord, so I don't observe it for that reason. We do observe Resurrection Sunday this week, although the pagan holiday of Easter could never coincide with the actual date of his resurrection.
