FWIW Mike, I kind of like seeing what is playing now!

Very interesting how the most vocal anti-music people are those with the least knowledge of the industry and the artists. Legalistic regurgitation of junk from wacky websites and preachers with pet peeves are not scripture. Why don't some of you see if the preacher who smashes TVs can destroy some Christian music CDs next week?

When did ALL of modern Christian music become ungodly? 1950? 1910? And by the way...Jesus was INCREDIBLY harsh on the Pharisees who saw a God event and assigned the credit to Satan. Chew on that before you pronounce complete judgement on thousands of musicians, and countless songs...99.999% of whom you don't know.
Jesus also got incredibly harsh with the Pharisees for making the house of God a den of thieves; which is what satan is now doing in the guise of Christian Contemporary Music.

No, the reader who sees a supposed christian posting that he is listening to the Grateful Dead gets one of two pictures:

1. It is ok to listen to Rock and Roll
2: That guy is a christian?
Exactly why i questioned his salvation and the fact the guys he plays music with don't have christian lyrics to any of their songs.

1. we don't have the right to question peoples salvation. we aren't in charge of what God does.
2. this thread has sufficiently stirred up trouble hasn't it.

J.D. are we related or what! LOL boy do we think alike, i see another has gotten my point exactly. but i shouldn't be surprised the Holy Spirit does do that often.

Remember, the OP has to do with the more outragious forms of the CCM, not the lesser.

I'm not trying to say who is saved and who is not, but how can a born again person not be disgusted with the ways of the world? Why would anyone want to bring the sounds of worldly rock and roll into God's Holy Church? We're not talking border-line stuff here like syncopated measures (as in Fanny Crosby) or a stray reference to a "prayer wheel". Some of these bands look like they ascended from the pit. Don't tell me not to judge.

Way back in the 70's I was thinking about writing some songs to market. I borrowed a book from the library "How to Write Songs that Sell". The chapter on "spiritual" music said plainly to "avoid using words like "God" or "Jesus" so your song can cross over into secular markets. Instead, use the generic term "you", or "him". Then I started listening to "pop" religious songs. You know what? They avoid the use of the words "God" and "Jesus", etc. Remember "YOU Light up my life" by Debbie Boone? Not one mention of Jesus or God.

Now that's the lyrics.

Now for the music: Why do I even have to mention the ungodly sound of screaming? How could anyone even imagine that we could stand before the throne of God and worship Him by screaming like a banshee??

And praytell, how on earth do you get worship out of self-mutilating piercing and marking of one's body?

The whole thing is ungodly to the core, and you should be telling your young ones in love to flee youthful lusts and grow up.

And it wouldn't hurt to teach them why the "Messiah" with it's Hallelujah Chorus could never be written by ANY of the CCM folks.

SCRIPTURES to ponder over on principles

Music That Pleases The Lord

1Cor 5:13, says, "It came to pass as the trumpets and singers were as one, to make one sound to be heard in PRAISING and THANKING the Lord. When they lifted up their voices with the trumpets and instruments of music PRAISING the Lord for he is good."

Also most of Psalms; Psalms 81:1, Psalms 95:1, Nu 21:17, 2 Cron 20:22, Ezr 3:11, Mark 14:26, Acts 16:25, Rev 5:9 and so many more.

Principles Of Peace What Is Best For Us

Again 1 Cor 14:33, "for God is not the author of confusion, but of peace as in all the churches of the saints" Rock and rap and punk music do not promote peace.
Gal 5:22-23 "The fruit of the spirit is love, joy, PEACE, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and SELF CONTROL"

Phil 4:8, "And the PEACE of God which passes all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds throguh Jesus Christ. Finally bretheren whatever is true, honest, just, pure, lovely, of good report, if there be any virtue and praise, THINK ON THESE THINGS"

1Cor 6:12, "All things are lawful unto me, but NOT ALL THINGS ARE EXPEDIENT (RIGHT), All things are lawful for me, but I will NOT BE BROUGHT UNDER THE POWER OF ANT" 1Cor 10:23 same.

Rom 14:19, "Let us therefore follow after these things which make for PEACE, and things where with one may EDIFY another"

1Thess 5:21, "PROVE ALL things hold fast to that which is good"

Principles Dealing With Our Flesh and Our Witness

Rom 13:14, "But put on the Lord Jesus Christ and make NO provision for the FLESH, to fulfill the LUST thereof"

Gal 5:16, "This I say then, walk in the spirit, and ye shall NOT fulfill the LUST of the FLESH"

2Tim 2:22, "Flee also youthful lust but follow righteousness, faith, charity, peace, with them that call the Lord out of a pure heart"

Titus 2:12, "Teaching us that denying ungodliness and WORLDLY lust, we should live soberly (self controled) righteously (seperate set apart) and Godly, in this present WORLD"

1Peter 2:11, "Dearly beloved I beseech you as strangers and pilgrims ABSTAIN FROM FLESHY LUST, which war against the soul" 1Peter 1:14 and 2 Peter 1.....Much of the music today feeds the flesh and not the spirit.

Remember Jesus said "Be IN the world but not OF the world"

Principles Of A Changed Life

2Cor 5:17, "Therefore if any man be in Christ he is a NEW creatrue OLD things have PASSED away, behold all things becoming NEW" which should include our taste for worldly music styles and words.

Romans 1:12, "I beseech you therefore brethern by the mercies of God that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, HOLY (set apart) acceptable unto God , which is your reasonable service.
And be NOT CONFORMED TO THIS WORLD, but be you transformed by the RENEWING of your mind, that you may prove what is good and acceptable and perfect will of God" and Romans 8:5-6

2Cor 6:16, "And what agreement hath the TEMPLE of God with IDOLS for you are the temple of the living God"

1Peter 1:14-16, "As obedient children, do NOT FASHION your selves to the FORMER lusts in your ignorance. But as he which hath called you is HOLY (set apart) so shall you be Holy IN ALL MANNER AND CONVERSATION"

LUST means to have a OVERWHELMING desire for some thing whether that be sexual, power, food, music, entertainment etc.

I don't recall any hellish screams in church. Joyful noise isn't quiet.
Missing the point the so called "Christian Rock" like REZ BAND and others isn't a JOYFUL noise it is SCREAMING and so are many other "CCM Rock" groups.

Not really.

The OP links to a page that talks about Point of Grace, Jars of Clay, Amy Grant, Petra (back when they were pretty mellow), and Audio Adreneline, who are all about as white bread and Top 40 as you can get. Hardly "outrageous", as you put it.

It also mentions REZ and DC Talk, neither of whom have been around for about ten years and back when DC Talk was popular, they were so tame as to be considereda pre-teen band.

The 77's are popular only in a very small niche, even within Christian rock. I would wager that I'm the only person on BaptistBoard who has one of their albums or been to one of their shows.

In fact, outside of going to one of their shows, I've never even met anyone else who's ever heard of them.

In any event, they're not "outrageous" by any stretch of the imagination. They would be along the lines of a Tom Petty or a Dire Straits.
I challenged you to look up any of the artist LYRICS listed (who cares how old they are?) nothings changed for the better since. and tell me if most of the songs you find can easily go on the secular radio station. I guarentee that they CAN. that is the point you can not tell the diffrence between what is christian or secular, right there is a problem all in itself

I do notice no one has gotten back to me on this issue so i must be right!

Yes wasn't it him who said Kathy Troccli was not a christian but a catholic which i replied that she was saved by her own testimony. and if she isn't a christian that her music and lyrics are more doctrinally sound and more edifying than those who are suppose to be ones?

I haven't heard Mikes testimony, so i really can't tell by his writings or the kind of music he prefers. the bible says to judge what people say and that is what we are doing.

No trouble on this thread, the only ones having trouble would be the troublemakers, i am glad to be getting the truth out.

That should be very familiar for you after all you do it on this site often enough.

Kind of like questioning peoples salvation because they listen to certain types of music
by the way i wasn't the only one who questioned his salvation and those were not my words. Mike questioned someones salvation so he made it fair game.

We're not in third grade. Rachel wrote (NOT an attack) reporting that you question salvation. Well, I read the thread and guess what? You DO.

That gets more people in trouble here than you can imagine. Don't try to justify your vile sin by comparing it to another. Christianity 101 teaches that THAT is a no-win situation (see Gen. 3).

The proper response would be "I'm sorry I broke a rule and questioned salvation. I repent in sackcloth and ashes and will do 20 hail marys . . " :D :D

You get the pix.

I take that as a personal attack why because other people said the same thing not just me but i am the one these girls always complain about. he questioned Kathy Troccoli salvation and i have heard her testimony i haven't heard his.

here is my quote it says "you guys" Mike never said whether the guys he plays with are christians in fact he indicated they were not

I wrote...
I checked out some of the lyrics by these guys, do you play on the secular radio station? i can't tell by the lyrics if you guys are christian or not.
so stone me

Funny how this thread has taken a weird turn. I don't think it is valid to say anyone attacked another's salvation...I read it to be a lack of testimony of how the other person's music may have failed to identify them as a Christian.

Dr. Bob, what rule was violated (I re-read them)..uh besides your own public personal attack? The questioning of salvation was started a few pages back and not by Frenchy just for the record. Jesus says we will be known by our associations and our actions and to say that one's action seem to be contrary to Christ's teachings seems par for the course. Plus seeking your forgiveness since no derogatory comments were directed towards you.....and sackcloth is really scratchy and leaves a rash
I would hope that this doesn't escalate into someone getting banned or suspended. ;)

Back on topic: It seems that very little is said about being a testimony as Believers and Followers of Christ. I guess if we see Christ with long hair then it is not a far reach to make him a 'headbanger'!! We are in a spiritual warfare and until we realize that we must be clearly identified with one side then we stand the chance of getting shot...whether by accident or not! If one of my Marines tries to dress partly like the enemy and partly like the Marines he will get shot at us Marines and maybe the enemy or not. But whose fault is that? We can't 'live' in the world, 'act' like the world, or 'be of the world' and then expect others to assume we are Christians. And don't bring up Burger King or autombiles or other 'items of the world' we are talking of a spiritual failure as Christians try to fit into the world instead of being seperated for Christ.

AMEN MRCoon...well said...we do indeed have way too many "professing" Christians trying to blend into the world they are supposed to COME OUT FROM AMONG.I appreciate your astute military assessment of the situation since it is obvious that the Word of God often speaks of things in terms of this life being a WARFARE.This business about music is a HOT topic and always will be since it almost always preceeds and sets the tone of true(or false) worship.By the way...Semper Fi brother!! My son Chris and his wife Justine are both in the Corp stationed at Pendleton. They have two small children(my wonderful grandbabies)and he is set to deploy to Iraq in August.Pray for them. They need to be saved and right with the Lord. It's a burden I have.Keep on keeping on for the Lord And our country.God Bless You and thank you for your testimony and your service.

Jeremiah 10:2 'Learn not the way of the heathen'. Wow! says it all right there. The christian is not to learn the worldly music.

Maybe we should give up the twelve-tone scale, too; after all, it was invented by pagans.

For that matter, what are you doing speaking English? Repent, compromiser!

Of course, if you don't see a problem with taking song lyrics out of context in order to try to manufacture a point, is it really that big a stretch to believe that you'd do the same with scripture?

Yeah, I hear the Bible says "there is no God."
