Video games

Brother, I can testify! I have been a gamer for years, I worked for some game companies a few years ago. I would stay up for hours playing counter-strike or warcraft or whatever the game of the month happened to be. I really became convicted of how much time I was spending playing games, and of a lot of the content that was in these games (GTA anyone?)

I do still play some games, but I have cut them way down. I try to limit the time my son spends playing games to something reasonable (and I police his game content like a hawk). I try to make better use of my time, learn a new hymn on my guitar, or read a few chapters of the bible if I have too much free time. But I will play video games from time to time, sometimes super monkey ball with my son, or I might occupy myself on my palm pilot with rocket mania if I am out. My wife spends entirely too much time playing video games. I think I am going to have to take her gameboy away.

 

Some of us replace games with things like BB. I know I have... but once in a while I still get out my old Nintendo. Two buttons and a cross... gotta know your roots, baby.

 

Hey, I still have an original Mattel Intellivision system. Old geek, old skool! haha

 

I have Pac-Man, Battlezone, Asteroids, Joust, Galaxian, Pole Position, Defender, Centipede, Dig Dug, Missile Command, and Tempest all my computer right here. No need to get out the ol' console. (Although I'm thinking about setting up a mime machine.)

 

There is nothing like old school Nintendo, nothing! The graphics and things that todays games have are amazing, but I grew up the the NES, and it brings back fond memories. Whats not to like with the Super Mario Bro. theme song?

 

we use the SMB theme song as "background music" when we do games and such...

 

LOL! MR, you can't get unbiased advice from folks who probably spend the majority of their day surrounded by electronics the same as you! They just don't get paid for playing with thier computers!

Go see what your non techie aquaintences are doing (surely you know someone!) besides gaming and then decide if you're missing something.

I personally do gaming/internet instead of TV so I mostly don't feel guilty about it. Mostly.....

 

I have Game Cube--my boy plays Lord of the Rings war games---I play Medal of Honor series plus Call of Duty series

 

Wow, you guys are so like my husband! He's even drawn me into his games sometimes. I think my husband has Call of Duty games, too.

MRCoon, Ive had the same thoughts, and so has my husband. There are some games he liked but got convicted over their violence or their use of questionable materials....perhaps the language, etc.

And actually he hasn't played anything in quite awhile, his wife's been on the BB too much!

I love Call of Duty and Medal of Honor. I am a WW2 buff so anything that can simulate what took place (somewhat) is fun and exciting.

 

I posted awhile back on here about how video games were holding me back from the Lord.. While video games may not be a sin, it can be Satan's tool. Video games are addictive, and some of us are easily addicted. I was a hardcore WC3 player, played it about 3 hours a day! It really was a hard addiction to break, but luckily I broke it at a young age and havnt been playing video games to the same extent. Video games have a couple negative effects on us, especially if they are online games such as I played. They are :
1)Waste of time.

We only have one life, and we are supposed to be good stewards over the time God gives us. Think if you replaced video games with studying the word? You would be quite the Bible scholar!

2)Being unequally yoked

Playing online video games, you are often exposed to a whole lot of filthy language, after awhile this WILL affect you.

Those are really the two reasons I felt I had to quit, but I believe your own conscience is testifying to the fact these video games arent good for you, why else would you be doubting and having questions about them?

Just remember, you can quit playing them if you feel they are holding you back.

Oh the shame in playing a game that depicts killing people. That's why I play Halo. Aliens aren't people.

 

Gaming, like television, the internet, sports ect. can hurt a Christian, but to say that it is "evil" or "sinful" to play is unbiblical. Certainly as with anything we do in our life, it must be done in moderation.

 

Killing isn't the problem even if the characters are human. War games don't bother me, but Grand Theft Auto does.

Why? Cause in this instance the killing is gratutious murder.

Course now the pacifists in our midst will tell us there is no difference if you're a Christian, but we'll have to disagree.

Halo is a favorite at our house too......

 

The game I like? SimCity 4. Strategy and planning. No killing.

 

Age of Empires and Empire Earth are my favourites

Sim City does have killing I think. Can't you send random disasters and things?

 

From the perspectives of that, probably so, however I don't like to spring disasters on my cities. I try to be a nice mayor!

 

I'm terrible at the sim games. My town normally die of thirst...

 

This really is not what "unequally yoked" means, but anyway...you could always not wear the headset and still play online if those you are playing with use bad language.
