Those things that are on the outside both physical appearance and verbal reveal what is in the heart.

Baloney, who is the standard for approval of outward appearance? You? What is there in the appearance of long hair that suggests an unsaved heart? (the subject of this thread). I have had short hair since the early 50s, like old hymns, love fellowship, and sermons. However, you have no right to determine what outward appearance reflects a heart of Christ. If you are concerned about outward appearance and trappings, I am sure the Catholics would welcome you with open arms.

I don't have no worries about ever being accused of HAVING long hair but
I suppose its too long when:
--it'll stall out the best electric Mule sheers on the market
--it can be rolled with women's curlers
--you've spent enough on hair spray to invest in the salon company instead
--you can repeat the episode of Absolem's misfortune
Since you are one of most vociferous in proclaiming that to avoid the biblical condemnation of drunkenness that we must not drink (alcohol) at all, then why, to avoid the shame of a man having long hair, do you not say that all men must keep their heads perpetually shaven?

...as opposed to the testimony of those that walk around telling them because they don't look right, where the right types of clothes, listen the to right kind of music, and smell a certain way they'll never even be welcome at church. Not pointing fingers at you, av1611jim, but there are those in our communities that preach such an exclusivistic Gospel. Stupid.

Find the verses in 1Corinthians 11 that concern men's hair and simply apply it to your life.

I like to think about ole Absolem---galloping along on that horse---and that long hair getting tangled up in those Oak tree branches and limbs---and him just dangling there by his hair---and ole Joab comes along and shoots darts into his heart---he died needlessly---dangling by that long hair----he was a disgrace and a rebel to his daddy---and he died hanging by his shame!!

What do you have that brings shame and reproach to the Holy Spirit the most??? Cut it off or out of your life---immediately!!

1 Sam 16:7

But the LORD said to Samuel, "Do not consider his appearance or his height, for I have rejected him. The LORD does not look at the things man looks at. Man looks at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart."

Whether we like it or not man does judge by outward apperance and how well one conducts himself, speaks and even writes.

Does that make it right? not always but it usually is a good indictor of what is going on on the inside. i do not and never have had any desire to dress in a way that inticed a man (never really had to) nor did i feel a need to pierce parts of my body that drew attention to myself either. I am conservative by nature and it shows in most all i do. But i know very good people with good hearts who may while still being modest and flambouant are more colorful than i or have a tongue pierced or more than one ear, or listen to music i do not prefer, does that make them evil or wrong? i say NO! now there is line there somewhere to be drawn when it comes to dress, music, what we put IN or on the body and what comes OUT of our mouths, that will be a good indicator of out HEARTS.
Because whether we like it or not we are a WITNESS and EXAMPLE good or bad.

Proverbs 23:7 "As a man thinkth in his heart so is he" Proverbs 16:23 "A wise mans heart guides his mouth" and so many more

And because we are all men striving to be more Christ-like we shouldn't let this be the norm... If God doesn't look at outward appearance, neither should we.

Sometimes, never always.

That's great to hear. Kudos!

Agreed.

That's true... there is a line. Do you decide where that is for anyone but yourself?

Have to agree in the fact it is hard sometimes to tell the difference between the genders now and days. My hair will ONLY grow down to my shoulders then stop, that is where it is at right now. I still wouldn't judge someone based on the length of their hair though. i always give people the benifit of the doubt, i have to get to know them first, no matter what they look like, race, their class, background or whatever. maybe it's because i actually enjoy people and love meeting new people. the word stranger means nothing to me. my husband on the other hand is more skeptical and needs to get to know someone first before he loosens up.

In fact we have a family we just met (we volunteer at a christian camp near by) right now staying on our property in a RV for the summer. and if you were to meet the husband he may give you the wrong impression, little rough looking but we found out he is real nice, loves the Lord and who are we to judge? so hopfully we all will have a good summer and they can save the funds they need to get a place.

I'm not sure if a drunk apple and an orange hippie are that unlikely a pair.

Do you like to think about Samson? Here was your teetotaler, and he even went past that into avoiding the evil of ever touching a grape. No, he broke that; and he broke his vow to never touch a dead animal. So the only "shame" he had left to bask in was his never-cut hair, and then he let some persuasive chick do the 'right' thing and get rid of that longggg hair.

Well, which was Samson? the drunk apple or the hippie orange?

That could also be a pretty sure sign that the pastor has put his finger on that area in your own life. And I would say that a pastor who wants to be the Holy Spirit is not for me.
You obviously did not understand my statement. </font>[/QUOTE]Not only did I understand your statement, I lived it for too long. You needn't think that if everyone understood you they would agree with you.

Lots of men have short hair and aren't saved. According to some they are giving a testimony of salvation, if in fact you believe christian men with longer hair are giving a bad testimony. It works both ways. Outwardly you never can tell. Some of the things I've seen people insist on here on the BB as being a good christian witness are also done by unbelievers.
And in all the discussions on this topic we've had here, no one has ever shown where the standard of length is in the bible.

Hi Donna,
Your comments are right on the mark. No one has ever shown the standard in the Bible because it is kind of hard to translate a heart that has been saved by Jesus Christ to a length of hair. Jesus spent quite a bit of time, and at times showed anger at the Pharisees for their outward appearance, whitewashed tombs. I find it incredible that a pastor would believe outward appearance means anything in relation to witness or salvation.

Jesus had long hair. I've seen the pictures!

Seriously, though, clean shaven? I thought pastors had to have a beard. (God took care of the hair part for me, though.)

There is no outward sign of Salvation.....BALONEY! Some of you people should spend more time in the Word of God and less time on this board! Read Matt. 7:16 (Donna that is in the New Testament, toward the front)Read also Luke 8:27-35. It was said that some unsaved men have short hair so they must be showing signs of Salvation. Having long hair for a Christian fellow won't send him to hell but it sure will hurt his testimony. The best barber in the world is the Holy Spirit. I wonder why is it so many people on here have a problem with worldly things?
