Is there anything that is a shame and isn't a sin?

I'm glad we straightened that out. My sarcasm seems to tangle people up sometimes.

The fact that God said that Nazarites could not cut their hair shows that long hair is not a sin. Yes long hair is a shame as Paul wrote in 1 Corinthians 11, but it is far from being a sin.

A Nazarite having to walk in shame kept him more humble, IMO.

Nicholas asked in the OP if "it" is the condition of one's heart.....

On one hand, salvation IS all about the condition of your heart, but if God only cared about the inside of a person than why would He choose to mention externals at all?

So, no, the condition of one's heart is not all that matters to God ultimately.

why do you suppose that all pictures depicting our Lord show him with long hair?

I think longish hair is attractive on a man, my self.

Is it a sin to not win a ball game?

Or another angle... Elizabeth, wife of Zacharias and mother of John the Baptist, used a word sometimes translated "shame" about not having had children before, as she was older than the normal age for childbearing before John popped her open.

Hi, this is my first post on this thread. I don't agree with men having long hair because of what the Bible says about it being a shame for a man to have long hair. IMO if you do something to bring shame or reproach to the name of Jesus Christ then it is a bad thing.

The Bible also says, "if a man knoweth to do good and doeth it not, to him it is sin." Now don't get me wrong I'm not trying to say that it is necessarily a sin, I'm just trying to say that if you know in your heart (not just your head) that it is good to have short hair and you refuse to cut your hair, then it becomes a sin.

Sin is anything that displeases God. I think we would all agree to that. If it is a shame for a man to have long hair, then I can only imagine that it would displease God for a man to have long hair, therefore, it would make it a sin.

But if long hair is a sin in God's eyes, then why would he tell certain people that they were to be Nazarites? That they could not poll their hair?

You are saying that God tells men to sin and that is just not so.

No sir, in all do respect I am not saying that at all. I SAID that if you believe in your heart that it is good not to have long hair THEN it is a sin. Please don't try to tell me what I am saying it is not very polite.

In a round about way, you are saying God told men to sin. As I said, God told some they cannot cut their hair. You say that long hair displeases God, therefore making it a sin.

In all due respect, musicforyou, that is not all that you said. SFIC's post was spot-on in response to the following quote:

    Thank you, StefanM.

No, I do not believe all things that are a shame can be considered sin. Nor do I believe it is a sin to have long hair (although I never had long hair myself).

Yes and that is my opinion. I do not believe that God tells anyone to sin and if you can show me where in the bible it says that a man should have long hair please inform me.

Numbers 6:5 All the days of the vow of his separation there shall no razor come upon his head: until the days be fulfilled, in the which he separateth himself unto the LORD, he shall be holy, and shall let the locks of the hair of his head grow.

Judges 13:5 For, lo, thou shalt conceive, and bear a son; and no razor shall come on his head: for the child shall be a Nazarite unto God from the womb: and he shall begin to deliver Israel out of the hand of the Philistines.

Wow. God using a long haired man to deliver Israel out of the hand of the Philistines!

    One more verse:

    1 Samuel 1:11 And she vowed a vow, and said, O LORD of hosts, if thou wilt indeed look on the affliction of thine handmaid, and remember me, and not forget thine handmaid, but wilt give unto thine handmaid a man child, then I will give him unto the LORD all the days of his life, and there shall no razor come upon his head. {a man...: Heb. seed of men}
