OK SBCers out there - who would you vote for - assuming burleson allows his name in the nomination.

both have some strong positives and depending on your point of view - some strong negatives. Both are avowed conservatives. Floyd is a mega church guy and has built his church into a seemingly very strong dynamic church. He is the chosen one of the powers that be, and it seems to be his turn. Floyds negatives are that his church gives less than 2% to the CP. There also seems to be some controversy about the fire truck baptismal that is used for children (all I really know about this is what I read over on Tom Ascols Founders blog). Evidently Paige does not think very highly of this practice calling it blasphemous, but the questioner kind of tricked him with the question, not letting him know that it was Ronnie Floyds church he was asking about.

Burleson - also very conservative, but has angered the conservatives over is blogging on the IMB issue. Is also a leader amongst the younger conservatives - at least those that blog. One of his strengths I think is the Memphis statement that was signed by he and 29 other mostly younger conservatives. His church does give at least 10% to the CP - a tithe rather than a tip!

My vote goes to Burleson - but I think that he loses 55-45 and perhaps worse.
But I would love to be surprised by a Burleson win!

    Hello Jimmy,
Here is why Burleson won't win and also (coincedently) why he should. In times of stress people resist change. No surprise there. But SBC is enduring significant stress. It's not just IMB, CBF, TGBC, et al. The cornerstone of pride for SBC is that there is growth. That cornerstone has taken some serious hits in the last year. Hence the renewed emphasis on evangelism. (It never really went away, but we need it now more than ever. [I agree by the way]).

Ronnie Floyd is the voice of continuity. People who feel stressed will vote for him for that reason.

Burleson on the other hand, while conservative, is the voice of transformation. Never mind that the new day in Christ requires that transformation. People percieve him as someone who will bring on a process of change. The more we need it, the less likely we are to have it, simply because people are nervous about what has and what might take place.

I'd go for Burleson. We need to end the "good ole' boy" system before it destroys us.

I agree with Stefan. I would vote for Burleson too. That is not a knock against Ronnie Floyd either. I have enjoyed listening to him and think he has done a good job at his church. I just think it is time for a change.

Well Bro Burleson will not run even if nominated from the floor.

Dr. Floyd will be the president of the SBC at the end of the annual convention this year. I think he is a strong candidate who has a proven track record of Godly leadership within our convention.

I'm not saying I'm voting for anyone, this isn't a political race it is a service opportunity. I realize there are politics involved, but I still view this as someone interviewing for an opportunity to serve as a leader of one of the finest denoms in the SBC.

It seems on his website that Burleson is more open to doing whatever God calls him to do, including running for pres. There is an Arlington, TX pastor ( Ben Cole)who really seems to want to nominate him. We will see - but our friend Preachin Jesus also seems to be plugged into the young leaders group. This could be the most interesting SBC in years.

I would vote for Burleson if I went. Not because he is from OK. LOL
But because I admit I would vote for any reasonable candidate to get the SBC at least somewhat away from the apparent current process: backroom selection of a mega-church pastor.

If Burleson is elected, I just might be so happy I'd have to barge into FBC Springdale to shoot the baptismal cannons in celebration!

The best thing that could happen to the SBC is to dissolve it, except for a central bank that would fund various projects. There is no need for any of the other SBC positions. Each local church is independent and should function that way, without "voting" for anything at another level.

I'm biased, I've been listening to Burleson for about 8 years now through tapes, internet and a few occasions at his church. His stance is consistent on diversity within the SBC. In his church there are members of his own staff that disagree with him on certain issues but they are allowed to teach and even preach what they believe scripture says. My vote would go to Wade B.

I think it will be a win for Floyd, even though his church gives a very small percentage of its income to the CP. Although many SBC folks are disturbed by the lack of support for the CP among the mega churches, they all agree that it's nice to have what monies they do send. The percentage of their gifts may be small, but the amount is very significant.

When Floyd is elected, I believe the SBC will see a backlash from some churches in the form of a decrease in their CP percentage of giving as a form of protest of our newly-elected president's church's small percentage giving to the CP. Just my opinion.

I suspect the "mainstream" Baptist faction of the SBC is having a heyday with this turmoil among the conservatives.

It will be interesting to see how it all washes out.

I have not yet decided to attend this convention in Greensboro due to the cost of gasoline and air travel. I may decide to go just to be able to say, "I was there when..."

If those are the only two candidates (even though there's no guarantee that both will run), then I'd vote for Burleson.

But I sincerley hope that preachin is half right and that Burleson won't run. I also sincerely hope that preachin in half wrong because to me Floyd represents much of what is wrong in North American evangelicalism.

(And I know I'll probably have to defend that last statement...I just don't have time to right now...)
