Well, I know I'm gonna get smacked for this one, but your husband has no biblical authority to forbid you from listening to music that you enjoy, especially since you, as a Christian woman, have made the determination that the music you listent to is neither unGodly, nor does it compromise your walk with God.

Men who act in this manner abuse their spousal authority and resonsibility.
</font>
I agree. Peggy, your husband has no right to tell you what to listen to and what not to listen to. I know you mean well, but you're letting him take the idea of the husband as the spiritual leader of the home to an unhealthy (and frankly, just plain creepy) level.

Your husband is your husband, not your master.

You need to tell him to get bent.

Really? I grew up with them so it's hard to imagine somebody not all that familiar with them.

"Muswell Hillbillies", "Misfits", "Everybody's in Show Biz" are all good.

"Songs We Sang For Auntie" is my favorite of all of the anthologies, of which there are many.

I guess the most obvious example would be The Who.

Mike I exhausted the catalogues of nearly every "classic" band you can name from the British invasion to more obscure stuff that rock critiques fawn over in private (Moby Grape, It's A Beautiful Day anyone?). For whatever reason I've just never listened to The Kinks, but I'm thinking their stuff stands up to the best of any other band out there.

I am probably going to make you mad, Mike, but IMHO The Kinks were one of the "also rans" that would never have had any success were it not for the Four Lads From Liverpool and the invasion they led.

And PLEASE tell me that you didn't like "Come Dancing" and "State of Confusion" during their short-lived '80's comeback......

Herman's Hermits, on the other hand: now that's good music!!!

Out of curiousity, what about "Turn Turn Turn" by The Byrds? They stole it from the Old Testament, but I really love that song.

</font>
Actually, "You Really Got ME", and "All Day And All Of The Night" were released in '64 and were just as hugely successful as anything else at the time.

But that loud, pounding guitar crunch sound is not what we're talking about. For whatever reason the Kinks were banned from the U.S. for four years and didn't get to share any of the commercial success (and in large part critical success) of the other bands who Broke into the U.S. market.

Ray Davies went back to England and from the period of 68' to somewhere in the 70's (estimation as I'm still devouring their albums) created some of the finest music I've heard yet. This is the music we're talking about.

I don't know. Maybe but it's kind of hard to make that argument when they were kind of an outsider band to begin with.

I loved that song and I still get it stuck in my head every now and then. It might not have been a great Kinks song, but it was a great song.

I was in a band in jr high school in Toms River and we did "Come Dancing".

The chorus of Julie Miller's song, "I'm Thru With You (Dear John Letter to the Devil)" is identical to the chorus of "Come Dancing". Everytime I hear it, I always unconsciously insert "the day they knocked down The Palace, my sister stood and cried..."

Hey, speaking of which, am I the only one who noticed how eerily similar "Come Dancing" was to Nick Lowe's "Half a Boy and Half a Man"?

But shouldn't a Godly women submit to her husband even if she disagrees? Seeing that by doing so she is not denying scripture.

Yes, she should but don't forget that He has a responsibility here, as well.

The Bible gives her the liberty to make her own mind up in matters of conscience, particularly trivial matters such as this and for him to dictate such areas as what kind of music she's allowed to enjoy isn't loving her as Christ loved the church (not that he doesn't do that - I'm sure this is just a blind spot in this one area), it's excerising a power play over her.

He is trying to be a spiritual leader and keep worldly influence out of the home. That sounds like the love of Christ if you ask me.

Being a spiritual leader does not mean ruling with an iron fist to the point that you dictate someone else's behavior, particularly not behavior that the Bible doesn't condemn. If it's good enough for God, it ought to be good enough for the husband.

My father did not allow any secular music in the home while I was growing up, and I'm glad my mother respected that. It's not as if the radio is one of life's necessities, and I can understand that parents might not want to filter everything that comes through their home just so the kids can have a little entertainment. We can all find other pursuits that are equally if not more fulfilling. When I reached high school age, my father trusted my judgement enough to let me start exploring music, and so I did.

I intend to continue that tradition with respect to television in my home. We have a dvd player and a vcr in the home and that's it. There's no way I'm gonna waste my day sifting through all the trash coming in over the airwaves. I'm fotunate to have a wife who shares my concerns though.

Hi guys;
First; Worldly music with a 'christian' world view? Wow! this will date me. How about QUICKSILVER MESSENGER SERVICE; "Pride of Man"?
It's been a while but a couple lines quickly come to mind....
"Oh God, Pride of man,
broken in the dust again..."
Another line went something like...
"Only God can lead his people..."
After all these years: many, many songs I did drugs to are still stuck in my head. Man I hate that.
And secondly; a comment about wifely submission.
Show me where Paul, Jesus, Peter, John, Moses, David, or God the Father said, "ye wives, submit to your husbands as unto the Lord except when you don't like it".
Someone has rightly said, submit to your husband, he will answer to the Lord. If he is wrong, he is wrong unto the Lord. YOU are called to obey Him.(both Him, Jesus, and him, hubby) This is a command of the Lord Jesus. Therefore, if you submit, even if you do not like it, you will be in essence obeying the Lord and will be rewarded for obedience. If your husband is wrong, then he will be punished somehow. But the issue you raised is not one of obedience, IMO it was simply one where you were seeking approval for what (apparently) the Holy Spirit has revealed to you to be wrong. Didn't you say you feel bad when listening to your music when hubby is away? This indicates you KNOW it to be wrong and are under conviction for it. A word of advice. Do right. Deny yourself and follow me. (I read that somewhere) tee hee...
In His Service;
Jim

One of the songs I get to sing with my band is Buddy Miller's "My Love Will Follow You". In addition to the great message of the song, I speak during one of the instrumental breaks. What I say is a paraphrase of Matthew 18 and Romans 5:8. It fits very nicely with the lyrics. Here they are with my words in italics:

Take your suitcase and take your heart
Take a train to the dark
My love will follow you
My love will follow you

You can try to lose yourself downtown
You can burn all your bridges down
My love will follow you
Oh my love will follow you

CHORUS
My love will follow you
Down every highway of your soul
You can leave me far behind
My love will be your shadow
Everywhere you go

So close the door
Turn in the key
Leave me here like a memory
My love will follow you
Oh my love will follow you

Even on the road that takes you down
Where the cords of human kindness come unwound
My love will follow you
Oh my love will follow you

CHORUS
My love will follow you
Down every highway of your soul
You can leave me far behind
My love will be your shadow
Everywhere you go

And Jesus said to them
"I tell you the truth:
If a man has one hundred sheep
And one of them wanders off
Does he not leave the ninety-nine
To go off and look for the one who is lost"

In the same way, God demonstrated His great love for us
In that, while we were still sinners
Christ died for us

[BRIDGE]
If you should ever go so far
That you cannot get back
You may not remember
But my heart will not lose track
My love will follow you
Down every highway of your soul
You can leave me far behind
My love will be your shadow
Everywhere you go

So go ahead baby and take that train
In my heart you'll still remain
My love will follow you
Oh my love will follow you
My love will follow you
Oh my love will follow you

Another mainstream song that reflect scriptural ideas (Matthew 11:28-30, 1 Peter 5:7) is Johnny Cash's "Pack Up Your Sorrows":

Wellif somehow you could pack up your sorrows
And give them all to me.
You would lose themI know how to use them
Give them all to me.

(refrain)

No use cryin’talking to a stranger
Namin’ the sorrows you’ve seen;
Oh’cause there are too many bad times
Too many sad times
Nobody knows what you mean.

{refrain}

No use ramblin’ walkin’ in the shadows
Trailin’ a wanderin’ star.
No one beside youno one to hide you
An’ nobody knows where you are.

{refrain}

No use roamin’walking by the roadside
Seekin’ a satisfied mind.
Ah’cause there are too many highways
Too many byways
Nobody’s walkin’ behind.

{refrain}

You would lose themI know how to use them
Give them all to me.

Sarah McLaughlin's rendition of The Prayer of St. Francis is one of the most moving songs I have ever heard her sing.

I know I just posted this in another thread, but I thought I should add Van Morrison's "When Will I Learn to Live in God".

When Will I Ever Learn to Live in God

The sun was setting over Avalon
The last time we stood in the west
Suffering long time angels enraptured by Blake
Burn out the dross innocence captured again

Standing on the beach at sunset all the boats
All the boats keep moving slow
In the glory of the flashing light in the evenings glow

When will I ever learn to live in God?
When will I ever learn?
He gives me everything I need and more
When will I ever learn?

You brought it to my attention everything that was made in God
Down through centuries of great writings and paintings
Everything lives in God
Seen through architecture of great cathedrals
Down through the history of time
Is and was in the beginning and evermore shall be

When will I ever learn to live in God?
When will I ever learn?
He gives me everything I need and more
When will I ever learn?

Whatever it takes to fulfill his mission
That is the way we must go
But you've got to do it your own way
Tear down the old, bring up the new

And up on the hillside its quiet
Where the shepherd is tending his sheep
And over the mountains and the valleys
The countryside is so green
Standing on the highest hill with a sense of wonder
You can see everything is made in God
Head back down the roadside and give thanks for it all

When will I ever learn to live in God?
When will I ever learn?
He gives me everything I need and more
When will I ever learn?

Jackie DeShannon's "Put a Little Love in Your Heart"

Think of your fellow man
Lend him a helping hand
Put a little love in your heart
You see it's getting late
Oh, please don't hesitate
Put a little love in your heart

And the world will be a better place
And the world will be a better place
For you and me
You just wait and see

Another day goes by
Still the children cry
Put a little love in your heart
If you want the world to know
We won't let hatred grow
Put a little love in your heart

And the world (and the world)
Will be a better place
All the world (all the world)
Will be a better place
For you (for you)
And me (and me)
You just wait (just wait)
And see, wait and see

Take a good look around
And if you're looking down
Put a little love in your heart
I hope when you decide
Kindness will be your guide
Put a little love in your heart

And the world (and the world)
Will be a better place
And the world (and the world)
Will be a better place
For you (for you)
And me (and me)
You just wait (just wait)
And see

People, now put a little love in your heart
Each and every day
Put a little love in your heart
There's no other way
Put a little love in your heart
It's up to you
Put a little love in your heart
C'mon and

Put a little love in your heart
