Rather bad news for the astronauts if He did fling the spacecraft...

There is a song we sometimes sing that is written to the tune of "O Christmas Tree". I can't for the life of me remember the name of it though.

Have to agree though, those that are scripturally inaccurate are the worst. Probably why our books have a lot of editting done on them during revision and print.

    "O Christmas Tree"
    It's a prayer to a tree. Horrible.

I'm dying laughing here thinking of those poor astronauts being flung into space....very funny song, I don't think I could ever sing it with a strait face.

Of course, there's always the song called "I just wanna be a sheep"

I don't wanna be a hypocrite (repeat three times)
Cuz they're not hip with it
    I don't wanna be a hypocrite

I don't wanna be a pharasee (repeat three times)
Cuz they're not fair, you see
    I don't wanna be a pharasee

I don't wanna be a Saducee (repeat three times
Cuz they're so sad, you see
    I don't wanna be a Saducee

I just wanna be a sheep, baa baa baa baa (repeat three times)
I pray the Lord my soul to keep
I just wanna be a sheep, baa baa baa baaa

Very interesting (yet fun) song to sing....lol

After footbal practice in the little room off the locker room used to occasionally be heard, "Who Is He In Yonder Stall?"

The Yonder Stall song is a funny one for the first line, but I think it is actually a good song. I just can't sing it with a straight face.

Thanks. It's even funnier to read than it is to sing.

I think they took the verses from old Burma Shave signs.

I hadn't thought of that, but as soon as i read your remark, I just started laughing. I had a picture of a guy driving down a road seeing burma shave signs and thinking "This would make a great hymn"

Well, I must really be old fashioned because I like "In the Garden" Didn't Jesus pray in the garden and remember the Garden of Gethesameme (SP)
where Jesus prayed. I must really be getting old. I still like the old hymns that we used to sing as I was growning up and the one about the trees clapping their hands, just goes to show you the miracles that God can perform and that all of nature should be praising our God. I know ya'll are having fun making fun but you need to really look at the words of some of these songs. Some of
the ones you've mentioned, I've never heard of and
am glad I haven't and I think a couple are childrens songs, that's why they are repeated over and over. The man that wrote "It is Well with my Soul" had lost all of his family while they where travelling on an ocean voyage to see him. Can you imagine being able to write that song after loosing your wife and your children? Granted some of these songs are silly and some are so hard to sing, I don't know why we ever try but come on guys, there's a couple of songs, you've mentioned that are really good. And yes, Matt, you need to redirect your mind, you know your big head where your brain is?

OK, these are hard to beat...a couple I kindof like.

Odd thing, I generally don't have much patience with the tripe level - something I seem to have in common with a lot of others here. My candidate in that category would be "Count Your Blessings" - I'm sure its somebody's favorite, I just can't deal with it. The giddy music that goes with it doesn't help - perhaps different music could save that one but I'm afraid it has become so familiar (at least in the US) that we would have a hard time not thinking of the "old" way - baptists "always do it that way you know."

My second nominee is stuff that smacks of political activism - "Battle Hymn of the Republic." Snippets of the lyrics I can live with but knowing that song's history, I just can't sing it.

Both those have another distasteful slant to me - they both seem incredibly self-rightous and make hypocrites of the singer.

I like what AW Tozer used to say - that Christians don't tell lies, they just sing them in church.

Ok It's not a hymn but I can't stand this song!! The Yes Lord part makes no sense..it's like he couldn't think of anything else to write...lol

    Trading My Sorrows

    I'm trading my sorrows
    I'm trading my shame
I'm laying them down for the joy of the Lord

    I'm trading my sickness
    I'm trading my pain
I'm laying it down for the joy of the Lord

We say yes Lord yes Lord yes yes Lord
Yes Lord yes Lord yes yes Lord
Yes Lord yes Lord yes yes Lord Amen

I'm pressed but not crushed persecuted not abandoned
    Struck down but not destroyed
I am blessed beyond the curse for his promise will endure
That his joy's gonna be my strength
Though the sorrow may last for the night
His joy comes with the morning

I almost forgot one called "I Should Have Been Crucified". I always have a hard time singing it because my mind always wants to sing "There Goes My Everything", which has the same tune.

Try replacing 'Just as I am' with this and see what happens:

    Lost Forever

Where will you go, poor sinner?
How long will your soul escape?
Think of thy lot when forever
Cast in the dark, burning lake:
If, then you're lost and forgotten,
    Writhing in flames of despair,
    You will remember you've chosen
    To be there.

    Lost forever!
    Lost forever!
    Oh, how sad!

I don't like the Hymn always sung at Easter that goes "Up from the grave he arose". My sister and I made up our own very inappropriate words to it. Turns out my boyfriend did too!

You should think twice before mocking a hymn about the resurrection of our Savior.

The song you mention brings tears of gratitude to my eyes every year. But If you don't like it, that's ok...but, again, you shouldn't mock it. Just something to think about.
