Is music my calling?

Yes, you can be called to serve in music. But I would like to suggest to you to read a very important book concerning christian music. It is written by Dan Lucarini and is entitled: Why I left the Christian Contemporary Music Movement? It is a must for you.

 

I think God wants the talents He gives us used for His glory.

If you feel called to witness for Christ, and you have a gift of music, I suspect you are called to that field.

However, if you feel a call to music, and think witnessing for Christ would work well with it, maybe you don't.

Talk to God about it all.

"Contemporary Worship Music - a Biblical Defense" by John M. Frame, a balanced and objective book on music that has an extensive discography of contemporary worship music that passes conservative theological muster.

"The Music of Angels" by Patrick Kavanaugh that covers the eras of music from antiquity to the present. Mr. Kavanaugh is the founder of the Christian Performing Arts Fellowship.

And an excellent on-line book by Eric Bolden:

Nope. God's will for you is to marry, bear children and guide the house. Use music in your teaching if you wish, or use it to help make ends meet, but music is not your calling.

 

Well, take it from one who does the above AND has a calling in music, it can be done.

 

That is pretty arrogant of you, you have no clue what the Lord is doing in her life. Get down off your high horse please, it is not becoming of you.

There are many who have a calling in music and use it for the glory of God!

 

Only as long as the accent is on the first and third beats. Anything other than that and you'll have people moving from the waist down which leads to violent hip thrusts and next thing you know your church has become a den of iniquity.

 

SOMEBODY please show Scripture for your assertions that God calls one to "music ministry"?

God calls me to wake up, go to work, pay the bills, and yes, occasionally, sing.

 

Can you show me Scripture for God using you on the Baptist Board? It AIN'T there either.

God called me to minister.

I have gifts and talents in music. I use those in my ministry.

I believe we do get a little confused sometimes about calling toward the "music ministry." My call is in service to the church. Often times that is leading worship and the choir. Sometimes it's cleaning the bathrooms and mowing the grass.

Ephesians 4 says this:

I believe my ministry falls under the category of evangelist or pastor/teacher. While I use music in this ministry, sometimes I don't. Music is a tool that is used in the ministry God has called me to.

SD - no one can tell you what you're calling is. Pray, seek counsel... but ultimately you choose whether to follow where you believe the Lord is calling or not. I will be in prayer that you will follow His direction, and be happy in the ministry He lays out for you. One thing is for sure: if you are a believer and a member of His family, you have a ministry calling. Whether music is a tool to be used for you, you'll decide.

My cousin is a church musician part time. He has guest conducted choirs, written/arranged a few pieces, and has even had a few things published. I've even helped him "ghost edit" a few of his pieces. It doesn't exactly pay the bills, but it is a very enriching and rewarding ministry. He's got quite a talent from God, and I'm very proud of him.

If you feel you are called, then by all means, pursue it. Do not listen to the negative posts that will discourage you or tell you that Christian music is bad fruit. If the Holy Spirit blesses you, then run with it.

Whoa there. All are called to preach. All are called to share the Gospel. Music is one of many ways a person can share the Gospel with people. It's perfectly in compliance with scripture to think that someone can be called to the ministry via music.

 

Johnv, I agree with you 100%. We are all called to use the talents God gave us for his service. I've never had the talent of talking a lot, having been a stutterer when I was young, but I could always sing in perfect harmony with my sister. I overcame the stuttering with a lot of hard work and God's grace.
I was told by a pastor once that I wasn't called to sing, I was called to serve. I asked him how he knew he was specifically called to preach. He never answered me.
I know God has called me to sing when I look out at the congregation and see tears running down faces and when people tell me how much the words of my song has blessed them. It's not me that has blessed them. It's God in the words. Someone has called it a "sermon in song", and that's what we singers are called to do.
I feel like it would be totally against God's will for me to hid the talent he gave me. I'm not singing for myself or for man's praise. I'm singing to glorify God.

My question is, has God given you a desire to write and sing, or is that a human desire? I am not saying that you are desiring and not God giving you a desire. I am just giving you something to think about.
