Twenty two years ago today, 19 Sept, 1973, Gram Parsons, on vacation with some friends to celebrate the release of one of the greatest albums in rock or country history, Grevious Angel was found dead of a drug overdose by his fiancee and singing partner, EmmyLou Harris.

If ever there were an argument against drug abuse, this is it.

Parsons was a tremendously talented singer and songwriter and inspired artists such as Linda Ronstadt, the Eagles, J.D. Souther.

Mick Jagger and Keith Richards, both close friends of Parsons wrote "Far Away Eyes" as an homage to him and Jagger was so moved by his death that he was inspired to write one of the band's biggest hits, "Wild Horses".

There is much spectulation about his spiritual life.

He was raised in a Christian home and often wrote overtly Christian lyrics. Among Gram's other statements about this part of his life is the wardrobe that consisted of flashy Nudie rhinstone suits with religious themes and Bible verses, most notably the "John 3:16" jacket on the cover of the Flying Burrito Brothers' "Gilded Palace of Sin".

I think only Buddy Holly has reached so many with such a relatively small amount of material.

His life was short and his catalog consisted of only a couple of albums but what a lasting impact he's had.

Now Playing: Candy and the Kisses – “Do the 81 and Other Hits”

Since ASLANSPAL wanted to talk about Gram Parsons so badly, I thought I'd bump this up for him.

Now Playing: Iris Dement - "Lifeline"

Probably one if the most telling album/CD that was produced of Gram Parsons work was "Gram Parson & The Fallen Angels Live". Part of this live set includes radio interviews with Gram Parsons. I have loved the music that Gram had done but towards the ending of his life you could tell that he had drifted from God and almost completely emmersed himself in the worldly ways of Rock n Roll. Gram Parson's music continues to inspire but it also serves as a reminder that it is important to keep your guard up at all times to prevent one from straying from the Christian life.

Interesting that he and Rich Mullins died on the same day, because if you think about it for a minute...they may have a lot of similarities.
Both were apparently searching for something, and although some may argue that Rich did find that in his relationship with Christ, he was still on that pursuit.
There was a definite restlessness in their music that made you think that something was missing in their life.

Just a few thoughts...maybe you can come up with more, or maybe i'm just way off. Either way, i say, like Rich did, "Be God's!"

Steve Goodman and Jim Croce also died on the same date

At the time of Croce's death, Croce and Goodman were planning to make a CSN-type collaboration with Jimmy Buffett.

    Hmmm...

I remember that I was in Key West when Rich Mullins died.

I was only five when Gram died.

Now Playing: Los Lobos - The Town and the City
