First of all, I tend to agree with you on the named artists. I personally don't care for Ray Boltz but I will never question his heart or the validity of his music.

I will answer your question for them about what is wrong with Ray Boltz and Casting Crowns -- They us (gasp) drums and a backbeat..... (Horrors)

I had decided to sit this one out but, oh, well....

I agree that in order for music to be good Christian music, the Holy Spirit must influence both the writer and performer.
I thank God that the Holy Spirit didn't quit working when Wesley died. (BTW I like old hymns - my favorite all time song is "It is well with my soul"

I Thank God that He (the Holy Spirit) is alive and well, and that He is influencing CCM today also.

If you are going to convince any true Baptist of anything, you must use scripture as your foundation, not literature and websites from people that have a bias one way or another, people that don't use scripture - but others opinions.

Please answer what beat, tune, instruments are acceptable, and what aren't. Then prove it by scripture. You see, we have liberty as long as it doesn't go against scripture.

I'm fine with your decision to not like CCM. My dad hates it, but that's OK, because I can't stand Southern Gospel. It's just my opinion nothing else. Southern Gospel is glorifying God so praise God there are those that like it. I just don't.

What bothers me is that you called CCM artists sinners when you know nothing about them. And you don't even have Bible to back it up!

So please either back up what you believe with the Bible, or just call them your opinions.

I like both Traditional and CCM, albeit not every piece in either catagory, I have favorites in both. Like Tiny Tim, I love "It Is Well With My Soul", if you've never heard how that hymn came about go to: cyberhymnal.com look up the title "It Is Well With My Soul", it has all the details of which I knew some, but learned more when I went to that site. There is a wealth of information there.

There was a CCM group from England called the World Wide Message Tribe, they are no longer together. One of their songs was:"Jumping In The House Of God", You can look them up on Google.

I first heard of them when I was the youth teacher for small group Bible study. They were doing a documentation on the different small group Bible studies with video. When they did ours the guy with the camera said "Bruce do something", so I did a sort of dance. They showed that video in the sancuary and had "Jumping In The House Of God" as background music.

    You mean like this one?

    Or maybe these wild accusations?

First, cast the wild, baseless accusations from your own posts, then you will be able to see clearly to cast out any wild accusations from your brother's posts. :D

BTW, I made no wild accusations. Go back and read what I said rather than what you think I said.

"For unto us a child is born..."

"And He shall purify the sons of LEvi..."

"How beautiful are the feet of them that preach the gospel of peace..."

""And the angel said unto them, fear not, for behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people..."

These are just a few of the passages contained in the "Messaih". Its Scripture. If that int inspired and "spiritual", aint no hymn gonna do any better! [IMG]

SO many of the hymns we sing are theologically wrong, too. And  , God has even used secular music to focus me on Him.

I believe the Holy Spirit can and does use any music style for His glory.

i do not believe that secular music. music that does not honor God. can be used for His glory. how can God use ungodly acts for His glory?

just raising another question. but any music style? even 50cent, Metallica, ACDC???

hoo boy. if i grew in my faith listening to that junk then this whole world would be saved and there would be no great commishion.

i may be going a little extreme, but you've gotta go that far to emphasize it.

God can use anybody He wants for His glory.
he used the Babylonians, He used the Assyrians,
He even used the Greeks and Romans.
Greeks for the language He chose to give us the NT, and the Romans for their roads to carry the gospel to the world.

I understand what you are saying though. That is where we need spiritual discernment. Just lumping into a category and calling them sinners is just being spiritually lazy.

I don't like all CCM, and I know that there is some that are bad eggs, but you can't say all are because they are not.

That is like saying all IFBs are legalistic.
    Some are, some aren't.

Quit being lazy and do your research before you generalize statements.

I seem to have raised the hackles of some here. Don't get me wrong! I like secular music. I like classical music also. But when I am in church, I expect the music to be Holy Spirit-inspired, having no taint of the 'world' and the 'flesh'. Is that too much to ask?

There are good Christian songs being published today. But when we are worshipping in church, we don't want the 'carnal stimulation' of contemporary Christian music with rock [and pop] rhythms. That's all!

For those who are disturbed by my observation on Handel's Messiah. Let me clarify. Handel's music is good classical music. I like his Water Music [baroque] and several other pieces. I believe the Messiah is his masterpiece.

But when we are born again [born of the Spirit], we are guided by the Spirit who dwells in us. The Messiah is a wonderful product of man, but it is not entirely a product of the Holy Spirit.

What do you guys think about David Phelps? Or Avalon? Or 4him? I personally don't see anything wrong with this kind of music.

So you are saying that you know without a shadow of a doubt that God had absolutely nothing to do with Messiah?

PLease name for me those whose songs, song titles are OK, that are "entirely a product of the Holy Spirit".

Is "Amazing Grace" a spitrtual song that is wholly inspired by the Spirit? How does the musical setting change this? Also, can we not set a new tune to this text? If it is truly inspired, then we shouldn't change anything.

What exactly is "carnal stimulation", LIKING something? God didn't create us to hate music. I don't think you even know what worship is.

Procyon, do you know that what a friend have we in Jesus was written by Joseph Scrivener?
He was one of the so-called Plymouth Brethren (we don't name any denomination since 1 Cor 1 prohibits any sects or denomination) and had a lady to marry but was drowned. Since then he lived alone, helping the workers for Railroad construction and the poor people.
He lived poor all the time, but when he died many poor people followed the funeral in Port Hope which is 100 Km east of Toronto where you may have passed by, where the former news anchor Peter Jennings was born and grown up.

I think some songs are greatly spiritual and the others are less spiritual, and some others are not spiritual at all or contain wrong messages.
But in general Hymns are helping the people to remember the Bible message.

I think the oldest Hymn song is written in 1 Tim 3:16
    God was manifested in flesh....

The song sung by the early church people so that they may memorize the truth.

You are right, being born-again is the most important criteria.

That would be most of us on this thread. Born-again believers as a rule detest legalism. You clearly do not.

I guess I don't understand. Are you saying there is some music that is "entirely a product of the Holy Spirit?"
