Martin Barre...possibly the greatest underrated guitarist today

    When will Martin Barre get any respect?

    For almost forty years, between Fairport Convention, Jethro Tull, and their various side projects, he has proven himself to be an absolutely stunning guitarist and master of many different style.

    And yet, he never shows up on any "Best of" or "favorite guitarist" lists.

    Why is this?

    He's one of about four guitarists on the planet that just leave me amazed.

    See what I mean? As many guitar players as we have here and not one person appreciates him.

    That makes me sad.

    I remember him from Tull. Really like his style around the "War Child" days, and "Minstrel in the Gallery." He and Ian Andersen really meshed well together.

    Well, Mike, I respect the guy's talent. And I hate to go all David Cloud on ya, but Jethro Tull's album "Aqualung" is so blasphemous that I cannot listen to hardly any of their music. I do have "Stand Up", & "Benefit", which are both excellent albums. (BTW, how about their bass player ?) But I sure wish they didn't blast Jesus Christ as hard as they did.

    Not that I would excuse those things, but I read in interesting interview with Ian Anderson once in the Wittenberg Door, in which he said that he was terrified of church because of something that happened in his childhood (he never did say what and I didn't want to assume).

    He said that when his parents would take him to church, he would run away and hide up in a tree.

    But, anyway...are you familiar with his stuff with Fairport?

    Not that I can post, but check out Jethro Tull's "Crest of a Knaive". That's their best.

    He also appears on several albums by Fairport Convention, a group known for tremendous guitar players.

    We usually go to see Tull any time they come within a hundred miles or so.

    They do mesh well, indeed.

    I hate to beat this comparison to death, but they are the Buck Owens and Don Rich of prog-rock.

    We saw him at a Fairport show a few years ago and he was given plenty of time up front. Why he never put more effort into a solo career, I'll never know. He was just tremendous.

    And the way he bounces back and forth from genre to genre and style to style so effortlessly really impresses me.

    Not really, I did hear a solo album he did, and thought it could've had a lot more soloing. I can't remember the name of it.

    On the albums I've mentioned, he really gets to stretch out. I really like the English guitar bands of this era, Yes, Deep Purple, Fleetwood Mac with Peter Green......

    BTW, did you know their very first record "This Was Jethro Tull" had Mick Abrahms on guitar, not Martin ? (Not very good, blues with flute & such) You probably knew that.

    That really surprises me that you're not into Fairport. Given some of the other things you've told me that you like, I would have thought you'd have jumped all over them.

    I think I'm one of those rare people who actually likes both lineups of Fleetwood Mac.

    No, I didn't, but I'm sure my brother in law did.

    I'm the Coral Reefer Band Geek. He's the Jethro Tull Geek.

    I thought I knew too much trivia about JB & CRB but he's like a Tull encyclopedia.
