I can't find drums mentioned in the bible... BTW, I thought David played drums?

All I know is that in Psalms it says to make a joyful noise. I figure a drum sounds joyful enough and well... it sure is noise!

1 Chronicles 15:15-17 (NIV)

And the Levites carried the ark of God with the poles on their shoulders, as Moses had commanded in accordance with the word of the LORD. David told the leaders of the Levites to appoint their brothers as singers to sing joyful songs, accompanied by musical instruments: lyres, harps and cymbals.

2 Samuel 6:5
David and the whole house of Israel were celebrating with all their might before the LORD, with songs and with harps, lyres, tambourines, sistrums and cymbals.

"Sistrums," cymbals, tambourines, of course, are percussive instruments.

Just over 10% of the Levites were dedicated exclusively to musical worship (1 Chron. 23:5). It can be surmised (from the other passages during that same time frame) that many instruments were percussive.

And Musicforyou, correct me if I'm wrong, but I think you're misquoting 1 Cor. 13:1 out of context: "Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, and have not charity, I am become as sounding brass, or a tinkling cymbal."

Archaeological excavations done in Hebrew territory have found drums that resemble todays djembe....a cylindrical frame with a skin head.

I haven't interacted with you much but I can tell that your desire is to be faithful to the Word and serve God faithfully. We probably won't hit 100%, but plenty of common ground here

 

Ezk 28:13 say's of God speaking to Lucifer
"Thy workmanship of thy TABRETS (symbols and drums) and of thy pipes (windpipes) was prepared IN thee in the day that thou was created.

So I would assume any time you see the word TABRETS that is refering to DRUMS.

Genesis 31:27 "Wherefore didst thou flee away secretly, and steal away from me: and didst not tell me, that I might have sent thee away with mirth, and with songs, with TABRET, and with harp?"

1 Samuel 10:5 "After that thou shalt come to the hill of God, where is the garrison of the Philistines: and it shall come to pass, when thou art come thither to the city, that thou shalt meet a company of prophets coming down from the high place with a psaltery, and a TABRET, and a pipe, and a harp, before them; and they shall prophesy:"

1 Samuel 18:6 "And it came to pass as they came, when David was returned from the slaughter of the Philistine, that the women came out of all cities of Israel, singing and dancing, to meet king Saul with TABRETS, with joy, and with instruments of music."

Jeremiah 31:4 "Again I will build thee, and thou shalt be built, O virgin of Israel: thou shalt again be adorned with thy TABRETS, and shalt go forth in the dances of them that make merry."

The Tabret

The Tabret is an ancient percussion instrument which no longer exists as such. The earliest mention of the Tabret (Gen 31:27 KJV) dates back to about 1740 BC (that's over 3700 years ago !), so it appears to have been in common use for worship and celebration in very ancient times. There are no good illustrations, or even good descriptions of how the tabret was made, what it looked like, or exactly how it was used. The root word for tabret is tabor, which describes a small frame drum with one head. The word tabor is also used to describe the frame used for embroidery - with two hoops used to keep the material taut. While the timbrel has small bells, rings, or metal discs attached to the frame to make a jingling noise, most sources agree that the tabret did not have these. As a drum, the tabret would have been played by beating with a small drumstick, or by tapping with the hand. The tabret was often accompanied with a pipe, and, at times, both may have been played by the same person.

Frame drums were common in the Middle East and elsewhere in ancient times, and exist in many cultures today. Arabs have the duff (or dif), which is a large diameter frame drum and the riq, a smaller version of the same. The Tar is a frame drum with one head found in North Africa. Same with the Persian Daf, and many others. The ancient Israelites appear to have adopted the tabret during their time in Egypt, where such drums were in common use.

Drums are (and were) often decorated with bright colors on the frame or drum head, and we can assume this to be true for tabrets. The addition of streamers or ribbons for decoration appears likely. At least one source states that tassels (or ribbons) were added to tabrets and timbrels in accordance with Jewish custom. Jewish men then and now wear tassels on their garments and especially prayer shawls to remind them to keep the commandments of the Lord. Their use on tabrets and timbrels may well be based on this.

The Ezekiel passage is mis-used by some to "prove" that drums are evil. If anyone takes that jump in this thread, here's a pre-emptive strike:

"Windpipes" are also mentioned in the same verse, yet people will not unilaterally condemn woodwind instruments (or a pipe organ)--the descendants of this particular instrument.

If God can make a rock sing, then I figure He can use just about any instrument He wants to.
