lets look at the "timbrel" or as i understand it to be the "tamborine" (correct me if im wrong but israel did use tamborines in their music. no?)

most tamborines sound the same - am i to stay away from tamborines?

what about piano's? oh no. elton john uses the piano. i guess i'd better throw out the hammond honey. its making these fleshly desires well up inside of me. when i play my own songs - my friends think of ray charles or elton john... i guess my career's down the drain for the music industry.

am i to throw out my piano as well?

lets look at vocals. lots of people can hit the same notes - and even harmonize those notes. now for a christian to hit a 'high E' note and a non-christian to hit a 'high E' note at the same time... is the christian supposed to stop their voice box and tell it to behave and not act as the world acts?

this is comparing apples to apples. not apples to oranges. its all got to do with music.

are you following me so far SFIC and Linda? i dont wish to post this over and over again.

Can you be certain that it was the Lord that helped you to write it? After all, satan knows music too. He was created a chief musician if you will.

He very well has led many to play the music that many try to say God was behind.

see what i just did there?

you accuse me of lying. why did you do that?
(on a side note: i do believe you are soundly saved - that was just to display as an analogy)

why do you accuse me of lying?

I am telling you satan knows music. Satan uses music to appease the flesh and fleshly lusts. Satan will use music to draw people away from all that is God.

As I said, can you be sure it was God who helped you in the music? How can you be sure it is if it is the same music that is in the world?

its NOT they same music thats in the world SFIC. it may sound similar - but it is NOT the same. get it? NOT the same.

how do i know its from God?

because i write my music while i pray. i pray while i dont play guitar - but when i try to write my own stuff - i pray at the same time.

Just because one writes music while they pray does not necessarily mean they get the music from God. If their heart likes the worldly music, they will play the worldly music.

SFIC... "Matthew 4:9 9 And saith unto him, All these things will I give thee, if thou wilt fall down and worship me."

what does that have to do with this thread?

dunno. just thought I would post it.

Actually, since satan knew music from the beginning, I figgered maybe, just maybe some might see the connection that satan does try to deceive any way he can... he can even offer the very music that he knows appeals to and feeds the flesh.

It is the same old song and dance SFIC. Beat the person down with shame, confront them with scripture taken out of context and if they don't agree with your power posturing attack their character because above all you have to be right. After all your own spirtuallity is dependent on your being seemingly more spiritual than others. You have a spiritual bully temperament which seems to say, if I say it is so it has to be and I will beat you up with scripture if you don't agree. You are wrong. Where is your tolerance for anothers liberty in Christ?

Gekko their is no shame in having fun SFIC is standing firm in his spiritual bullying tactics.

"the World" used to like the style that they hymns were written in. there is a great analogy to this debate in the old Looney Tunes, with an owl who like jazz, and his father was against it and instead taught him the waltz tune "Drink to me only with thine eyes", which sounded just like one of the old hymns, even down to the King James style pronoun! Then, there's the national anthems, which mention God, but are nevertheless songs of praise to a secular nation. Remove the words from them and the hymns, and there is no difference. It is the same basic sound.

Then you have classical, which is still liked by many non-Christians.

The whole problem here is that those songs are not considered "the world" because the culture that produced them was not considered apart of the world, but rather a "Godly Christian culture" (and my many, virtually a new covenant nation like Israel of old) because of its outward morality. But that was a total fallacy that covered up much sin that was prevelant in society then, and denies the Gospel teaching that we all are equally sinful. Sin was instead basically seen as being some outside "corrupting influence" from Africa or modern de-Christianized Europe or something like that. Our old society, in which everyone was not even saved, depsite their outward morality, was still part of "the 'world system'--the 'kosmos'". It was not the Kingdom of Heaven.

Many of you will acknowledge this, but then, to protect the doctrine of which music is good, we swing around to claims about "the flesh" and rhythms, and "natural effects" are often thrown in there, plus past associations. But all of that does not prove the delineation you all are insisting on, as no one has yet shown that a certain style is ALWAYS feeding the flesh, in ANY context, while others always feed the spirit.

SFIC's argument about "Satan can inspire music" can be true for classical as well. That's why the spirit behind the music cannot be narrowed down to some beat accent, as people are trying to do.

No spiritual bullying about it. What I have shared from the Word of God and what His Holy Spirit has revealed to me concerning music is quite mild when compared to the havoc Christ caused when confronting that which was contrary to the Word.

Why, I do remember Him even calling the religious crowd 'hypocrites.'

why did Jesus call even the religious crowd hypocrites?

well i can most assuredly say it wasn't because of the music they danced to.

i've still yet to see proof of your argument saying that christian music when compared to secular music sounds exactly the same. where's the examples?

and (because i know some do) does that make it wrong?

again - i'll bring up the guitar issue - there are only 120 single notes possible on my acoustic guitar. if i play a series of 60 single notes - and my non- christian friend plays a series of 60 single notes on my guitar... what is the possibility that some single notes will be the same?

a very large possibility. there are no sections of christian to non-christian on a guitar - 60 notes are not set aside for the whoremongers and 60 for the righteous.

they use the whole spectrum. what's the use of a guitar if you're only going to use the first three frets? (which is where most P&W artists play - which is where the money is - which is why i dont play there much - i vote for the underdogs. :) )

so am i playing my guitar contrary to the Word when i play a B7-A-E and the non-christian next to me plays a B7-G-C ??

no. im not playing contrary to the Word.
just because something is similar - or just because something is in shadow of another - does not make it the same.

that is why i question why they always recite psalms 23 at funerals... it baffles me - because the psalm is not talking about death anywhere. it says "though i walk through the valley of the shadow of death" - ok.... so if i walk in the shadow of a cement wall - am i a cement wall? no.

so just because my music may sound like another piece of music - just because of those shadows - does not make them equal.

    Gekko -

I struggle with this issue as well.

I am a musician. One of the handful of instruments I play is the guitar. I have been around people who made me feel like I want to hide my guitar in the closet, (as if it's something to be ashamed of). They make fun of Praise and Worship music. I think it's sad. I know the line has to be drawn somewhere, but it shouldn't be determined by someone's personal taste. I like many styles of music, (even some secular), I just try to make sure it inspires the right parts of me. There is nothing fleshy about joy, unless you have a skewed definition of the word joy. I say if you can do something and (honestly from the heart) praise God at the same time it's probably fine.

I think it is important to remember that Jesus called the religious people hypocrites because of the standards they imposed on others while they were full of pride and hatred towards those that didn't look and act like them.
