Preaching though Romans

Quite possible I think. I once heard that someone did a series on Romans. First week preached on Romans 1:1, second week Romans 1:2...Can't remember who it was, or how long he kept that pace up. I just wish I would have been there to hear it

John Piper has been preaching through Romans for the last few years. He is currently in chapter 9. You can find his notes (sermon transcriptions) at Desiringgod.org.

 

My preacher is going through the book of Romans right now and I'm really enjoying it! We are in chapter 5 right now, and it's just great! I love to hear the Bible taught. To have the preacher take the passage, break it appart and explain it {blondes like me don't always get it the first time! } and then put it all back together again. I just love studying a passage and just breaking it down. It helps you really understand it.

Well I've never critized his preaching, but it's always straight Bible, so there isn't much to go against. I love to hear preaching. I need to be convicted of sin, to be encouraged, to be taight. I want to grow, and by hearing preaching I can do that.
I think one reason when a preacher finds a nugget in the Bible, he's been studying it all week, and he's had plenty of time to roll it around in his mind. Yet we in the congregation, are hearing the meaning for prehaps the first time, and so we don't often grasp it as quick. Once we really think on it, we usualy get it. {although with my denseness, sometimes it takes me longer!}

My favourite commentary on Romans is by Charles Hodge, 1800's Presbyterian here in "The Colonies".

If I remember correctly, he was president of Princeton Divinty school for a while.

Tyndale House Publishers has a good series of lesson books called the "Life Application Bible Studies." They have thoughts and questions designed to lead one to apply the Bible to life. (A revolutionary concept, I'm sure)

Also try www.ccel.org - they have a large electronic library to read online.

 

I highly recommend John Piper's sermon notes, which by the way you can buy his audion sermons on Romans, which are much more interesting that simply reading the manuscripts. Also Martyn Lloyd-Jones did preach through Romans for 12+ years and his sermons are also available on the Web at his website (well the website his family set up). All of his sermons through chapter 13 are in print today. As far as commentaries are concerned, you should look at Thomas Shreiner's phenomenal commentary on Romans in the BGCT? series or Stott's commentary on Romans. Both are excellent. When you get to Romans 9, however, no one breaks it down better than Piper in his book, "The Justification of God: An Exegetical Study of Romans 9." It is tough reading, but well worth it. The book proves him to be a quality exegete of Scripture. May God be with you in your dilegent study,

I've been in Romans over three years - and am in Romans 9.

I use John MacArthur's and the late James Montgomery Boice's commentaries. Both are very good. I also have copies of MacArthur's messages on Romans on cassette tape.

Also have Hodge, J. Vernon McGee, and Ironside on Romans.

We were in Romans 10 today! Wow what a message! It was so good today, and i can't wait untill tonight! His outline went kinda like this:
1. God always has a man- 10:14,15
~a saved man
~a seperated man

2. God is always right-10:3,4
~the Isrealites went to get their own righteousness, but neglected God's plan. Works dosn't save.

3. God is no respector of persons-12,13
~God saves any who call apon Him.
~God loves us all the same. No one is better than anyone else.

4. God has a plan of salvation-10:9-10
~by grace through faith
~not of works lest any man should boast
~All can come to salvation

5. God has a book
~the Bible being God's perfect book, with instuctions about everything.
~You have questions, the Bible has answers.

Now those were the things I got from the message. And it's amazing how since the Bible is a living book, i might see something completly diffrent than another person.
We've been going through this book of the Bible since fall, and I'm really enjoying it. I can't wait till we get to chapter 12! It's one of my favorite chapters of the Bible!

I highly recommend Moo's commentary. I think his major blindspot though is that he is a postmill guy.

Seriously, between my course on Romans (I am in seminary), reading through Moo, and listening to Piper, and going through it in Sunday School (today was chapter 16), I feel more familiar with that book better than all others.
